In memory of one of the islands greatest tradgedies, the Iolaire Memorial. Take time out to ponder history and see the beasts of Holm that took the lives of so many in World War 1.

Just after the New Year bells, the Iolaire struck the "Beasts of Holm" in 1919, just on approach to Stornoway. The boat was full of sailors returning to their families and loved ones following WW1. The tragic loss of 205 men is still felt deeply today.

IolaireMemorial:situatedatHolmPointnear Stornoway, a poignant memorial for the loss of HM Iolaire, a yacht returning from war in the early hours of New Year’s Day 1919 with the death of at least 201 souls - undoubtedly the most tragic single occurrence to befall the combined island of Lewis and Harris.

This memorial is well worth a visit when you’re in Stornoway. A ship bringing local men back after the First World War, struck rocks just outside of Stornoway. A terrible tragedy as 205 men were lost within sight of the harbour.
