Tucked away on Church Street is one of Stornoway's nicest cafe's where the staff are always friendly and the coffee is good. Don't forget to check out their arts and crafts upstairs.

A visit to the Hebrides must include a trip to the mysterious Callanish Standing Stones. After seeing the stones pop into the café and visitor centre for a cup of tea or a meal.

It is easy to imagine that you have stepped back in time to experience the way of life in a typical crofting township of the last century. You can see traditional activities, including the weaving of the famous Harris Tweed. There is a small shop where you can buy mementoes of your visit, and you can relax in the cafeteria where you can enjoy the best of home-made fare.

Got some historic connections with the island? Then the records at Ravenspoint might point out family lineage. Worth a trip to see historic records but also nice just to stop at for a coffee and cake.

Parks & Nature

The Castle Grounds is on the doorstep of the Bayhead flat so you have easy access to one of the islands greatest resources. There are lots of walks including the Creed River Walk; Gallows Hill walk; Willowglen walk; or just a leisurely walk to Cuddy Point. Many users of the grounds cycle and additional routes are being added to accommodate cyclists. Most of the Castle Grounds is vehicle free making it safe for children and animals to run free but please be careful. Finally pop into the newly refurbished Castle and explore the museum and various deluxe rooms.

Garry is a superb beach and only 15 miles from Stornoway. Go swimming; explore the caves; walk the road to, well nowhere; and enjoy the scenery. Garry has a good car park and is an easy beach to access as the ground is relatively level.

My favourite beach on the island. You get a mile of beautiful sandy shoreline surrounded by hills and untouched landscape. A great place to let the children build sand castles and run about. The waters of Reef are amongst the safest on the island but please take care and be responsible. There are toilets and showers at the caravan site that can be used by the public.

If you plan a trip to the west side of Lewis then please stop at Dalmore beach. A superb location with awesome waves and a favourite for surfers. Great sand and scenery that your family will enjoy. Toilet facilities are available onsite as well as good parking. Take care in the water though as there are dangerous currents.

Just 12 minutes by car and you can be at Coll beach. Its great for walking, wind-surfing, kite flying or just having a picnic. A very flat beach that is a favourite for dog walkers and horse riders. The beach to go to if you don't want to travel far.

A favourite walking route that takes you along the old Postmans trail to the once isolated villiage of Reinigeadal. There are great scenes so bring your camera but be aware that it can be challenging at points. Last time we did this walk we got a friend to collect us at Reinigeadal rather than walking back the same route.

Entertainment & Activities

If you have children with you then a drive to Ness is rewarded by an expansive swing park that will tire those little ones out. Have a go on the zip line, then the basket swing, find someone to go on the Rota Bounce, try and climb the tall frame; then take time out for a picnic on one of the many benches. Lots of play equipment in a unique place. Toilets onsite for your convenience.

About 12 minutes walk from the Bayhead flat takes you to Stornoway Golf Club. Our club is highly regarded and visitors are always welcome. Fees for a round of golf starts at just £12 but many golfing enthusiasts pay the weekly fee of £30 juniors/£75 adults. Fees can be paid at the golf shop or bar within the clubhouse.

A welcoming place, with a peat fire glowing at it's heart, the flavours of the island in the canteen and the feeling that here in the distillery you find something of the essence of Harris. Entry is free to the distillery. Distillery tours cost £10 per person.

Close to the Iolaire monument you'll see some rocks that are an excellent place for mackrel fishing. You'll find mackrel there from around June to October every year. Take care on the rocks and watch out for the seal as he likes to steal your catch.

So its raining and you have young children. You don't want to get wet again but the children need to run off some energy. Well Adventure Island is worth visiting. Soft play and lite bites for a couple of hours is a good idea. Parking is a bit tight so I recommend leaving the car on Newton Street and walking round to Inaclete Road.

It's got to be the most remote 10 pin bowling ally in the UK. There are just 2 lanes but it is fully functional and lots of fun. Why not take the children to the excellent Ness swing park in the morning followed by a visit to the bowling ally to complete a great day out in Ness.
