Uig is an area in the south west of Lewis. There are many beautiful beaches to visit which rival the ones on Harris. Best to allow at least a day to visit them all.

Local History

A must see. The stones are in a beautiful location & the visitor’s centre is very informative. Food and a gift shop too. Also worth a visit when the visitor’s centre is closed to soak up the peace & quiet.

This memorial is well worth a visit when you’re in Stornoway. A ship bringing local men back after the First World War, struck rocks just outside of Stornoway. A terrible tragedy as 205 men were lost within sight of the harbour.

Shopping

There is no shop in Carloway itself. Stornoway has 2 supermarkets . Tesco and a Coop superstore. If you’re on the afternoon ferry it might be best to stock up before heading to the house. If you’re arriving later, there’s a Tesco in Ullapool. Around the island you will find lots of great local shops to get what you need. There are no shops open on a Sunday so best to plan ahead.

Sunday Traditions

Sunday is traditionally a day of rest in Lewis & Harris. Lots of people attend church services. No shops or petrol stations are open on a Sunday. Some hotels serve food on a Sunday. When we are at Viewforth we observe the tradition of not hanging washing out on a Sunday. These customs are important to local people.
