Theo Michael's painting, Reverie, features the Kamares Aqueduct with a couple bathing in the sunlight on a beautiful spring day. This Roman style aqueduct was built in 1746 by Bekir Pasha, the Turkish governor of the town at that time. It carried water from 10 kilometres away to Larnaca and was in use until the late 1930's. As the story goes Theo's father maintained that he used to walk on top of the arches, cooling his feet on his way to town. We never quite took his story at face value until recently, when a customer in our art studio relaid the same anecdote of his own father to us. More than 20 arches are still intact which are beautifully illuminated at night. A path joins the site to a footpath on the East bank of the Salt Lake, creating a semi circular cycle route all the way to the mosque of Hala Sultan Tekke.

Kamares Aqueduct is located just outside the Larnaca city near the old road to Limassol & when it was first built by the Romans nearly 2000 years ago it was the most prominent water supply on the island. Kamares aqueduct was subsequently rebuilt in 1747 & currently stands in its present form at the site of the old Roman aqueduct.

Built in 1746, this impressive aqueduct on the outskirts of town provided Larnaca's water supply until the 1930s. Once part of a complicated water engineering system that used a combination of tunnels as well to deliver water into the town, it was constructed under orders of the local Ottoman governor and styled on typical Roman era aqueducts. Today, the still sturdy 33 arches rambling across the green fields are an impressive sight. Come during the evening when the arches are lit up, or during the day, when sheep are grazed in the fields between the arches. You can get to the arches by hopping on any city bus that's heading in the direction of the K Cineplex. Address: Old Larnaca-Limassol Road

This beautiful 18th century aqueduct can be found on the road heading towards Lemesos (Limassol) in the area of Kamares, which takes its name from the distinctive arches (‘kamares’ in Greek).

The aqueduct was financed by Ebubekir Pasha who was the Ottoman Governor of Larnaca. The construction of the aqueduct commenced in 1747 and was completed in 1750. The structure was in operation until 1939 and consists of 75 arches. It is definitely worth visiting since it has been described as the most prominent water supply built in Cyprus. You must take a photo with the famous arches of Kamares aqueduct or watch the sunset through them, it is indeed a mesmerising scene. *Insider Tip: You can also walk along the 4 km nature trail right behind the aqueduct leading to the the famous Larnaca Salt Lake also giving visitors an amazing sight!
