A terrific collection of portraits of a diverse range of Australians, often featuring special exhibitions. check online for details.
The purpose of the NPG is to increase the understanding and appreciation of the Australian people – their identity, history, culture, creativity and diversity – through portraiture.
This is a gallery for everyone, even if the Collection focuses on those who have made a significant contribution to Australia. Check out the Hermannsburg group portrait pot, Nora Heysen’s compelling 1934 self portrait (currently on loan Sept 2022) and the very large Bob Brown portrait, representing the time and narrative of the proposed damming of the Franklin River in Tasmania. Great “book shop” with quality stock is next to the cafe. Sit in the sunny outside section, which overlooks Reconciliation Place and the High Court of Australia.
