ONZE (KIYAMACHI) .......... There are two of these in Kyoto but the Kiyamachi one is best. This little French Bistro is my go to for sardines, reasonably priced bottles of wine (2800yen), and real imported absinthe if you're brave enough. Located in the centre of town in Kiyamachi-dori, it has a great vibe, but make sure you sit upstairs at the bar or one of the 2 tables located there. Downstairs doesn't cut it. Good honest French bistro food. Staff speak English, and it's location is pretty with the Takase Canal across the street.

Open 3pm-1AM The best French food you can find in Kyoto at a very reasonable price. We get it, you're in Japan, why would you eat French food but this place is a must. Get your late night fix here and walk back to komorebi ( a 30 min walk directly West) if you don't want to feel guilty about indulging. TIP: Get the steak and fries. Seriously better than any steak we ate in Paris.

Stylish French style bar/cafe in a quiet neighbourhood just south of the main nightlife. Steak frites with curried butter, and moules marinièr come recommended. Easy to read menu and some English.
