Once a strong fortress on the summit of a rocky promontory, Dunure Castle now consists of a ruined 13th-century tower surrounded by a curtain wall, a 15th-century block, at lower level, containing kitchens, a hall and private chambers, and a well-preserved beehive doocot, dating from the 16th or 17th century.
This is where they film Outlander , fabulous place for a picnic. 10 minutes in the car.
Dunure Castle is located on the west coast of Scotland, in South Ayrshire, about five miles south of Ayr and close to the village of Dunure. Today the castle stands in ruins on a rocky promontory on the Carrick coast, overlooking the small harbour of Dunure.
