These spectacular cliffs giving wonderful views of Edinburgh are a result of a geological fault. Modern geology started here as James Hutton observed the rock layers. A plaque at the site notes this.
Holyrood park is walking distance from the flat, just past the Palace at the bottom of the Royal Mile. The park is a large area of steep rocky crags originally formed by volcanic activity.
