The Hell's Kitchen location of Universal Gear is making a concerted effort to stock a range of clothing that keeps in tone with the diversity of its surrounding community. Following the decade-long success of its sister store in Chelsea, the small chain of menswear and accessories opened this flagship store in midtown. The urban-industrial interior is kitted out with custom-built furniture: Colorfast tank tops, Retro Brand printed tees, and a small selection of Diesel jeans sit atop shelves made out of refitted torpedo cars. As well as European lines—Fred Perry, Ben Sherman, and Antony Morato—there’s an extensive swimwear selection in the back of the store.
