The Oulu Cathedral was completed in 1777. In the spring of 1822, Oulu was destroyed by fire and the wooden structures of the church were also burnt. The church was soon rebuilt to drawings by architect Carl Ludvig Engel. The original stone walls were the frame, the central dome, roof structures and the tower new. The church was completed in 1832 and the tower in 1845. Oulu Cathedral is open from 27 May to 1 September 2019 daily from 10 am to 8 pm with a guide on site. Cafe Crypt is open June 3 - August 9, 2019 Mon-Thu 10 am - 7 pm and Fri 10 am - 3 pm.

Oulu Cathedral (Finnish: Oulun tuomiokirkko) is an Evangelical Lutheran cathedral located in the center​ of Oulu, Finland. The church was built in 1777 as a tribute to the King of Sweden Gustav III and named after his wife as Sofia Magdalena's church.

Oulu’s imposing cathedral was built in 1777 but then came the great fire of 1822, which severely damaged the structure. Architect CL Engel rebuilt it in empire style, adding a dome.
