This is a fascinating visitor attraction. The site has been beautifully restored and you will be rewarded with an informative and entertaining tour. Make sure you allow plenty of time as there are many, many rich stories to be heard.

The Hackness Martello Tower and Battery were built in 1813-14 to protect British convoys during the Napoleonic Wars, with French and American warships attacking merchant shipping using the Pentland Firth. Although the sites didn’t see any enemy action, even when they were brought back into use in the 1860s, they still offer a fascinating glimpse into military life more than 200 years ago. The Martello Tower, one of only three surviving in Scotland, offers views over Scapa Flow, Orkney's famous naval anchorage during both world wars. The battery gives visitors the chance to experience barracks life and features furniture and other items of military memorabilia. Opening Details: 4 Apr to 30 Sept: Mon to Thur: 9.30am to 5.30pm Last entry 4.30pm
