Charming little town set around a major waterway. Martigues’ old town centre is not to be missed (17th-century fishermens’ quarter). The Provencal Venice made famous by many painters.

In January taste a Provençal stew or an Aïoli and enjoy a Provençal play. By taking the train from Niolon station spend a day in Martigues to see the Pastoral. In the off-season, at very beginning of January the Pastoral is a play performed in the Provencal language telling nativity and arrival of Jesus in our region. It is preceded by an aperitif, and a traditional Provencal meal. Depending on dates, either the Provençal stew or the aioli. The show is followed by a tasting of galette des rois and glass of friendship (cider). The Stew meal is a recipe originally from Provence made from beef marinated in red wine, carrots and herbs. Originally cooked in a daubière, a terracotta container fitted with a lid for stewing, stew is a traditional and emblematic dish of our region that has been passed down from generation to generation. The aioli is a dish made from cod and vegetables with a garlic sauce. Reservation at Martigues Tourist Office. By scanning QR code in pic you can get more information.
