Magnifique halte au cours d'une promenade dans le vieil Aix, voir notamment le triptyque du buisson ardent et se renseigner sur les fréquents concerts dans la cathédrale. En profiter pour visiter, dans cette même rue, le musée du vieil Aix, rue Gaston de Saporta.

Les origines de cette église se placent, à la fois, dans la légende et dans l’histoire. Elle serait ainsi édifiée sur un temple d’Apollon. Sa situation sur l’ancienne voie Aurélienne fait d’elle un trait d’union, un relais entre le monde romain et le monde chrétien aixois. La construction de la cathédrale a évolué entre le Ve et le XVIIIe siècle et se lit d’emblée sur sa façade : à droite, au sud, le portail roman du XIIe siècle jouxte un mur romain, tandis qu’à gauche, au nord, le vaste portail gothique richement sculpté du XVe et du XVIe siècle est surmonté au nord d’un clocher octogonal dans sa partie supérieure, érigé entre 1323 et 1425.
