Built in 1846 and currently under restoration, this historic house was part of the Underground Railroad and is a significant chapter in the Afro-American history in Cape May. A former slave, Stephen Smith was a successful businessman and philanthropist, who during his lifetime was said to be the wealthiest Black American in the nation. He established the first home in the United States for aged and indigent Colored people and helped to free hundreds of slaves. The non-profit was founded in 2014 and offers private tours on request of the home and garden. It is also included as a stop on the Underground Railroad Trolley Tour.
