Haddon Hall is the second most popular historic house (after Chatsworth) in the Peak District. Haddon Hall dates back from the 12th century and is a fine example of a fortified medieval manor house, very little has changed over the centuries in fact the most modern room in the house is the Elizabethan long gallery! As Haddon Hall provides a unique view of early English life it makes the property very popular as a film and TV location, various versions of Jane Eyre have been filmed at Hall as well as Pride and Prejudice, The Other Boleyn Girl and most recently Death come to Pemberley, however these are just a few of the Hall film and TV appearances. The Hall is open to the public, however please note that it does close for periods throughout the winter season, so please check its website for its opening times and special events.

Located just a few miles outside of Buxton the Goyt Valley combines some of the most picturesque valley, moorland, river and reservoir scenery to be found in the United Kingdom. There is plenty of walking routes in the valley, there are the two man-made reservoirs, Fernilee and Errwood to walk or cycle around and also the ruins of Errwood Hall to explore. For those you want more of a challenging walk, a walk up to the nearby Shining Tor offers great views of the surrounding area.

Often overlooked in favour of its more famous neighbour Monsal Dale. This dale really is a hidden gem, literally hidden! Many locals don't even know it exists! You have to venture into the dale itself to truly appreciate its breathtaking beauty. It's possible to walk here from Rose Cottage and it really is worth the while. The majestic slopes and imposing crags of carboniferous limestone that form Chee Dale create a spectacular setting for a walk, following the river bed and find the 'Stepping Stones' an Instagrammers delight! PLEASE BE AWARE: It can be tricky to navigate in places and especially when the River Wye is high, and even in fine weather, following the length of the gorge involves some scrambling up and down rock steps which can be slippy when wet.

A short drive towards Bakewell over the country lanes brings you to the atmospheric remains of Magpie Mine are one of the best places to visit in the Peak District and one of the top industrial heritage sites in Derbyshire. It was the last working lead mine in the Derbyshire orefield and is probably the best surviving example anywhere in the UK of a 19th century lead mine. The mine has a fascinating history spanning more than 200 years of bonanzas and failures, of bitter disputes and fights resulting in the “murder” of three miners, and a Widows’ Curse that is said to remain to this day.

Neighbourhoods

The name Chelmorton derives from Old English (a personal name + dūn) and probably means 'Ceolmaer's hill' Chelmorton is a classic White Peak limestone village set in stunning upland scenery, and a very quiet and peaceful village. It is one of the highest villages not only in Derbyshire, but all England and this region is known locally as Top Country. One of the dominant features of Chelmorton is the rarely seen field strip system, marked out by rows of limestone walls. The strip like crofts and patchwork of walls run at right angles off the main street and date back to medieval times. The village is built along this single street running up to the church of St John the Baptist, with its' graceful spire topped by a weather vane in the shape of a locust. Behind the church is Chelmorton Low (low in the Peak perversely signifies a height) and from here the delightful Illy Will Water stream runs down through the village. Opposite the church is the village pub, The Church Inn is a family friendly pub serving great homemade dishes and local ales. It also has a great outdoor seating area for whiling away a summer evening. Booking a table is recommended

A shoppers delight, with lots of independent and artisan shops, specialist markets and boutique finds you can while away hours roaming its pretty streets and perusing the local offerings. Head down to the River Wye and stroll along its pretty banks, (you can go all the way to its neighbouring pretty village of Ashford), feed the ducks and scoff ice creams in the huge parkland next to the river.
