City/town information

Managua is the sprawling capital city of Nicaragua. Besides its capital city, which is the administrative center of the country, the department of Managua has many attractions. Its territory has coasts on the Pacific Ocean and also goes through the 'Sierras de Managua' (low mountains) and continues on the wide plains that surround most of Lake Xolotlan (also known as Lake Managua). The department has famous beaches that are easily reachable and include luxurious or rustic tourist infrastructures. A few of them remain unexplored. Also, Managua has three important natural reserves: the Chiltepe Peninsula with two volcanic lagoons, the El Chocoyero - El Brujo natural reserve, and the Montibelli Natural Reserve, which is famous for being a birdwatching destination. Managua is quite a spread-out city. Green prevails in the city of Managua. Visitors will find it in boulevards, sidewalks, parks, roundabouts, gardens, courtyards, and neighborhoods...There are trees, plants, and grass everywhere! Either on an airplane or at the highest points of this territory, tourists will always see a large green mantle that usually contrasts with the roofs, streets, and facades of the multiple buildings of the city. Managua became the capital city in 1852 when the newly independent nation decided to end the eternal competition between the colonial cities of Granada and Leon, which had been capital cities in previous times. However, the title became effective until 1857. Since then, Managua is the largest, most powerful metropolis in Nicaragua. After the earthquake of 1972, “the new Managua” started building around the old historic center, therefore the city not only has one center but multiple ones. The area that surrounds the Jean Paul Genie roundabout (Galerías Santo Domingo), located in “Carretera Masaya”, 3 miles from my home, is one of them. Here, visitors will find shopping malls, cinemas, restaurants, hotels, banks, offices, universities, and residential areas. This is the most active part of Managua, either during the day or night. Along the same highway, there are multiple entrances to other shopping malls, good restaurants, and popular eateries.

15 min (7.1 miles) - The Masaya Volcano National Park is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Pacific region of Nicaragua. The reason is that you can here get in direct contact with its most active crater and its surrounding, as well as with the special flora and fauna in place. The volcano park offers at night, also, a unique scene that amazes the night visitors: the so-called “lava lake” which could be appreciated from the crater border.

Historical Old Center of Managua

After the earthquake of 1972, the former center of Managua was destroyed. It was due to this devastating earthquake that Managua nowadays has no real center. New shopping malls and hotels were rebuilt in other locations, which formed the bases for Managua’s dispersed structure. The old center, however, is still partially intact. Several buildings date from before the earthquake – some used and some unused – and you can easily visit this historical place and stroll around. The most illustrating example is the Catedral de Santiago. This impressive cathedral was not flattened by the earthquake, but it was damaged and abandoned. The cathedral was closed to the public because the government feared collapsing. You can, however, walk around and get an idea of the importance of this remarkable building. Next to the old cathedral, you will find an impressive building: the National Palace. This building nowadays functions (partially) as a museum, so don’t forget to go in and check out the National Museum. The Plaza de la República, as this place is called, also houses monuments that commemorate Nicaragua’s heroes like Rubén Darío. You can wander around in the small park where most of the monuments are located.
