Marvellous Mount Edgcumbe
The only authorised tour of the Marvellous Mount Edgcumbe estate. Only 300 metres from Plymouth, Devon but situated on the North Shore of the bordering County of Cornwall. We will be exploring as much of the 885 acre/358 hectare estate as our time allows but making sure we never miss the constantly changing highlights! We move on foot to appreciate the landscape, culture and history to the maximum. As the estate’s only authorised tour we have unique access to many special locations and knowledge not normally shared with visitors. This is a UK Grade 1 Listed Park with 7 acres/3 hectares of, world famous, formal gardens. If you come from the South you will drive directly to Mount Edgcumbe but if you come from the North, via Plymouth, you’ll be immediately immersed in history as the pedestrian Cremyll Ferry, is a service that’s been running since 1204AD! Once in the Mount Edgcumbe estate we will be walking through formal gardens, on sections of the 7 Km coastline, through woodland and in open country. We spend the vast majority of our time outside so please come prepared for the prevailing weather. You will be walking past a bay used by all manner of seafarers from the Vikings to Charles Darwin and all elements of civil and military marine activity. “Among all the scenes that memory could recall, none could be parallel to this.” – William Daniel Voyages Around Great Britain 1823
Archaeoastronomy & Heritage Walk
Archaeoastronomy expert Carolyn leads a guided walking tour, through the wonderful rich ancient landscape of Penwith, Cornwall. We will visit a number of ancient sites which includes stone circles, barrows, menhirs to name a few. Carolyn will take the time to describe how the ancient communities lived in this part of Cornwall and talk about how the monuments left by these people fit into this history. She will also talk about how these people related some of these monuments to the night sky. Lasting for 2.5 hours there is a real opportunity for people to immerse themselves into this fantastic natural landscape while escaping the crowds. The walk takes a circular route, which is about two miles in length and follows ancient trails through the landscape. There are some gentle slopes involved and the path can be uneven. It also can get muddy especially in the winter months. I also run Ancient Cornwall a Bronze Age a walk in another area of West Cornwall which is slightly longer 3 miles. https://www.airbnb.co.uk/experiences/861929 Thanks for looking :) Other things to note This is an off road walk apart from 20metres at the start. The tracks can be uneven and slippy, sturdy shoes are requested. The walk is about 2 miles in length but I can be flexible for all abilities.
