Sightseeing

This is a no-longer tiny village literally at the end of the road on Lantau Island. Go to see the houses on stilts and canals, market stalls and to take a boat to try and spot some of the remaining endangered Chinese Pink Dolphins.

The Big Buddha and the Po Lin Monastery may be on the major tourist circuit now, but I still take my visitors there. In fact, I enjoy when my hikes take me there too--despite it all, and if you can tune out the people milling about you, it is quite serene and beautiful. On a clear day, the view of the sea and islands is pretty. Beware: it is a very popular site. Trying to avoid weekends and/or going as early as you can stand it are good strategies!

Food Scene

There are a number of restos on Lower Cheung Sha beach. There is also a small grocery shop that carries the essentials. The fastest way to get there is to walk east along South Lantau Rd. Cross the road and take the the lane in front of the fire station, taking the left fork, then another left onto the first path leading left (toward the water). This is for confident navigators! The less-fast-pleasant-and-fool-proof way is to go to the beach and then walk left/east facing the Chi Ma Wan cliff across the water. At the end of the beach, look inland about 30m for a concrete path that takes you up over to Lower Cheung Sha beach. Restos etc are in the middle of the beach.

Small place that doesn't take reservations. People go there for their thin crust pizza and their homemade pasta. Both are absolutely excellent.

Parks & Nature

Hong Kong has excellent hiking. There are 100s of kilometres of hiking trails on Lantau, of which Lantau Trail, is just one. I personally like the parts west of the Shek Pik Reservoir. That gives the island's two tallest peaks (Sunset peak and Lantau peak) a pass but has temples, monasteries and from my humble impression, fewer hikers.
