Durham Castle is University College and so you can only visit on an organised tour. They are usually run by one of the students and very good and not very expensive. Visit the World Heritage Visitor Centre in Owengate, near the Castle for a ticket

A museum designed to look like a French Chateau in Teesdale, it is beautiful. The silver swan automaton is operated once a day at 2 pm so if you go well worth being there then.

Beaches

Crimdon Beach is beautiful, this is my favourite beach. There is lots of sand and you can walk for miles without seeing very many people. Check the tides as it is most impressive at low tide. You can also walk into Crimdon Dene from the beach. This beach doesn’t have facilities but you might find an ice cream van or a burger van at the car park.

Coast Road
The beach at Sunderland is impressive and you can drive all the way along the coast road from the mouth of the River Wear in Sunderland to the mouth of The Tyne in South Shields. There are lots of places to stop and take a walk on the beach or the cliff tops and have a coffee or an ice cream.

Seaham is the nearest coast to Durham City, it has a promenade, but the beach is mainly pebbles, you will get some sand at low tide. People come here to collect sea glass. You can walk to Seaham Harbour and get a coffee etc on the way. This was our go to beach when we were kids.
