Don't know why Air Bnb listed this under arts and culture. It's a great place to eat, work, or have a drink and hear music, depending on time of day. Interesting crowd; big living room like setting. Interesting, accessible, affordable food. Free Wifi. Peaceful in the morning, from opening around 6:30 until about 10 a.m.

Delicious, if very pricey, authentic Greek food in a cool (but very loud at night) setting. It's an easy walk from here and you can eat or just drink (or drink & eat) at the bar.

Near the white house, this place sells Belgian waffles prepared in many ways. They're yummy but the real stand out here is the soups. They are incredibly tasty and affordable and you can buy a large container to go if you want an easy dinner solution to take home with you.

Go here for tea, breakfast. lunch or dinner if you are downtown sightseeing. It is an informal self-service asian inspired cafe that will provide you with consistently good, budget friendly, healthy, Asian-inspired food. It's an oasis in the sea of (often very good but) very pricey restaurants in the neighborhood and a perfect stop for a bit before or after visiting the Mall. Go downstairs and sit by the Koi Pond or sit upstairs by the windows and watch the world go by. The French toast, Chicken Bento, the Iced Matcha Green Tea, and the spicy hot Chai are standouts but really, everything is good.

It's an oasis in the sea of (often very good but) very pricey restaurants in the neighborhood and a perfect stop for a bit before or after visiting the Mall. Parks & Nature
The beautiful Olmstead-designed park is ten minutes away and surrounds the National Zoo (which is free and open every day except July 4). You can run and cycle on extensive paths here and if you're feeling intrepid pursue a few hiking trails.

This is essentially a beautiful swamp that in the early to mid summer is filled with flowering lotuses, water lilies and other aquatic flora. It's lovely other times of year too - there are elevated boardwalks that carry you across the water gardens. It's a bit of a hike from my place (highly recommend driving there or grabbing a Lyft) but its' peaceful and lovely. NB: there are no eating establishments close by so bring your own food or prepare to drive elsewhere if you're hungry after your walk.

Kenilworth Park og Aquatic Gardens

3501 New York Ave NEIt's just beautiful. You'll have to drive or Lyft over here but it's worth it if you want to walk or run for a few hours in a lovely, peaceful setting under the most extraordinary trees.

There are benches where you can sit for a bit and read and enjoy the humid climate that keeps the exotic flowers that grow here in good health. It's usually pretty quiet too.

You have to make a reservation at this "speakeasy" (and don't forget to bring your ID!) but it's totally worth it. No food but a host of very creative drinks in a cozy, candle lit, elegant and intimate adult environment that's great for conversation. There is an outdoor bar if it's a nice night, but there is a time limit and if they're busy, when your time is up you may need to cede your seat to the next reservation.
