The Boyen Fortress was built between 1844 and 1856 to protect the kingdom’s border with Russia, and was named after the then Prussian minister of war, General Hermann von Boyen. The fortress, which consists of several bastions and defensive towers surrounded by a moat, was continually modied and strengthened, and it successfully withstood Russian attacks during WWI. Inside the museum you’ll nd a scale model of the fortress and a few odd items, such as a section of wall with a Russian soldier painted on it, used as target practice by the Prussians.

Sanctuary of St. Mary Swieta Lipka is a tiny village in the north of Poland, and despite its size it is well known – as a religious centre and a pilgrimage site. In fact, it is one of the most celebrated in the country. Whether you are a Catholic or a tourist with an interest in sacral architecture, this is a destination you have to see. Within the monastery complex stands a magnicent 17th century Baroque church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, where moving statues organ concerts invariably draw large audiences.

Mikolajki The original settlement was founded in 1444, but received city rights as early as 1726. More intimate and scenically pleasing than Giżycko, lively lakeside Mikołajki (mee-ko-wahy-kee) perches on picturesque narrows crossed by three bridges. Tourism has all but taken over here, and its spruced-up waterfront is lled to overowing with promenading families and pleasure boats in summer
