Lima, like any big city, has thieves. The best way to avoid their attention is to dress down and not have your cell phone out for too long. Keep your backpacks in front of you if you travel on a crowded bus or train. If someone you don’t know hails you, be alert to your surroundings. Peruvians are generally lovely. But Peruvians don’t trust themselves, so be like Peruvians. Trust no one you don’t know.
