Neighbourhoods

Take a stroll in the city center anywhere between Odeonsplatz - Karlsplatz - Sendliger Tor - Isator. These are all „entries“ (tor = entry/door) to the old town. This area is full of shops and beautiful historical architecture. Marienplatz is the heart of old town. If you don’t mind climbing lots of stairs, go up the tower in St. Peter’s church (entry costs a few euros) to get the best view of Marienplatz and old town. You can also check out Hofbräuhaus, which is the oldest brewery in town and is nearby. There is normally an orchestra playing there. Good for a beer and atmosphere but I wouldn’t recommend eating there. (U1 metro line goes directly to Sendliger Tor from Rotkreuzplatz).

Schwabing and Schellingstraße in particular is a more hip place of Munich with a diverse food offering and nice small shops. This area is right next to the biggest and oldest university in the city. Most good restaurants and bars are in Türkenstraße and in nearby streets. I just added a few in the images but feel free to explore more.

Known as the vibrant gay district of Munich, it’s one of the main nightlife spots in Munich with somewhat more upscale bars and clubs.

L’Osteria is an Italian chain restaurant. They have huge, tasty and cheap for their size pizzas, and this is their most beautiful location. There are a few others around the city and even a small one right in Rotkreuzplatz.

One of my favorite coffee place near home. They have all kinds of coffee including Turkish coffee. Bear in mind that service is often not too fast so it might be worth just ordering at the counter ;)

If you’re in for some peaceful time with good tea and vegan cakes, try Tushita. They also have a vegan bowl of the day for main course.

German breakfast mostly means bread and sausages (you can be very Bavarian and have Weißwurst, which is a white sausage served with a Breze, for breakfast in one of German restaurants), but if you’re craving and good big (hangover-friendly) breakfast, I’d go for English breakfast at The Victorian House.

Sightseeing

English garden is a huge city park. You can walk there from Odeonsplatz through Hofgarten. Check out Eisbachwelle, this is where surfers ride waves right on the river, and if the weather is good, walk up to Biergarten near Chinesischer Turn (Chinese tower) to have a bier and some Bavarian food.

The place where the Olympics took place in 1972. There is a nice viewpoint on one of the hills (free) or to get a view from much higher, you can go up the Olympia tower (11 euros/person). There nearby there is also a BMW center.
