Food scene

The apartment is located right in the centre of this lovely square. It's great for lunch, dinner or to have a refreshing drink or coffee but it's also great to see local people go about their life. During Semana Santa (Holy Week) in April, you can watch the parades from the apartment which is right in the centre. Then in the weeks leading up to Christmas the square is full of people for the zambombas. If you don't want to be amongst the noise and people a great place to see this is from the apartment!

If you want a small cosy restaurant close to the apartment, which offers a selection of dishes from around the world then this is the place. It's also great if you are vegetarian or vegan like me as they have a few different options and there is a sign outside that says 'Veggies Welcome'

If you want a beer, glass of wine or sherry right in the centre of town in an iconic building then this is the place. El Gallo Azul was closed for several years for refurbishment but it is back open for the public.

This is a fantastic little bar and restaurant that was recommended to me about a year ago. It's named after Lola Flores song who was a famous singer from Jerez in the 60s. The restaurant is themed around her. They make fusion tapas and there is something for everyone even vegetarians or vegans

This is a great bar only a minute away from the accommodation in Plaza de la Progreso. It serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. I come here often for breakfast. They offer a variety of different types of bread, tomato as well as avocado for the toast. It's also slightly cheaper and better quality than a lot of other places in Jerez.

City/town information

This town has the closest beach to Jerez. The entrance is under construction so not as welcoming as you arrive as it was 10 years ago but there are some nice bars and restaurants and several nice beaches all reasonably close to the centre of the town. It's also got a boat you can take to get you to Cádiz!

I lived in Sanlúcar for about 10 years on and off and it is a great place to visit. Sanlucar is famous for the horse races on the beach in summer, manzanilla dry sherry and its great cuisine. It is about 20 minutes drive from Jerez or a 30-minute bus drive. If you go by bus make sure you check out the times first as there are sometimes big gaps between them.

Sightseeing

Admission costs five euros. A great mix of Arabic and Spanish architecture. There is also a camera obscura and an early modern pharmacy. Especially the hamam and the former mosque, and the observation tower are architectural highlights. It takes under 10 mins walk from the accomodation.

There are some lovely squares in Jerez and this is one of my favourites. It is a stones throw from the apartment and has some beautiful historic buildings such as the San Dionisio church.

Great Sherry Bars

This is a traditional bar with tapas and great to have a cold glass of sherry! There is indoor seating as well as tables outside on the street. It's always busy and a great place to enjoy a tapas and sherry and watch people pass by the window. Make sure you go into the back and have a look at the old city wall that is maintained inside.

This place is in a very lively area just near the Plaza Plateros. It has a small inside area but people generally order inside and sit outside at one of the tables where you can have a glass of sherry or another glass of wine.

Don't miss some live flamenco

Jerez is one of the most important cities for flamenco in the world. There are many flamenco performances of flamenco throughout the year especially during and just after summer. Throughout the year you can also book a ticket to see a show at the Villamarta theatre. Tickets are always reasonably priced and there is a great atmosphere inside. If you want to see something more intimate you can try one of the flamenco tablaos such as the 'Tabanco Cruz Vieja' or Tabanco El Pasaje.

If you are stopping for a beverage you can pay afterwards

It's normal procedure in most of Spain except perhaps in some of the bigger cities like Madrid or Barcelona to order a drink and then pay the bill when you are ready to leave. This might mean you need to pay for several drinks if you are with friends and family.
Samgöngur

No need for a car to get around Jerez

Unless you are planning to take some trips to some of the beaches or mountain towns you don't need to have access to a car. Everything is reachable on foot.

No need for lots of layers in Spring and Summer

The summers in Jerez are quite long so no need to bring a jacket if you are coming in the summertime. Also bear in mind that in the peak summer season it is too hot to be walking around during the day so try and wake up early and walk around the city and spend the day at a local beach or relaxing inside.
