City/town information

The closest town to Origo Mare where the local surfers like to live and work. A mix of small businesses from barbers and dentists through to all the great bars and eateries. There's a market every saturday where you can grab souveniers or other small items and it's always a hub of live music on many nights of the week. Lajares also boasts a reasonably large supermarket where you can stock up if you need to.

Caleta is a bustling resort in the centre of the island just south of Puerto del Rosario and close to the airport. It's all about vacations in Caleta. If you fancy a British breakfast, watching the football or just catching up with other holiday makers or ex-pat's then Caleta is perfect for a trip or even a holiday. What it may lack in sophistication it more than makes up for in fun, lively spots to spend time and of course it has everything you might need whilst on holiday on our amazing little island

Surf and Sea

El Cotillo is a old fishing village now turned over mostly to tourism, due to it's incredible location and fantastic range of beaches. The surf beach is a lovely gentle beach break good for surfing (with a board of body-surf), bodyboarding and even kiting when the wind is up. At the other end of the village are the lagoons and associated beach. Small, warm pools filled by the sea where it's fun to paddle and easy and safe to swim. Walk on further past the lagoons and you'll find El Toston, the lighthouse that warns ships about the volcanic reefs to the north of the town. The town has various shops and supermarkets and an abundance of places to eat and drink. El Cotillo is a taste of the old life on the island. A must visit location in the North of Fuerteventura.

It is only a walk from the Origo Mare resort and for the surfers who visit ... this place is a mecca. The break is rocky and reefy but if you have the skills this break will blow your mind. The beach is also a little hidden gem that is easy to access and a pleasure to spend time at

Cofete is home to one of the best beaches on the island and probably in all of Spain. It's tranquil and serene and an amazing spot to unwind. It takes some effort and nerve to reach via the bumpy, off-road, 4x4 track but for those with the right vehicle and a can-do attitude, this place is a must see. You may also be able to visit Villa Winter where legend has it that Adolf Hitler once used to holiday ... it's a little macabre but it's a point of interest and man visitors take a look every year.

Costa calma lives up to its name. On an island renown for sun and wind, Costa Calma (the calm coast) lives up to its name. It's a little escape from the weather and a lovely tourist town and resort also. Visitors enjoy the wonderful beaches, and calm, safe sea for swimming as well as the bars, restaurants and amenities of the town.

Food scene

An amazing little resort town in the North, Corralejo is the main town to the North and a hot-spot for tourism. You'll find so many places to eat and drink or be entertained here ... alongside amenities such as supermarkets, the town-hall and anything else you might need whilst here on the island. It's lively at night and relaxed during the day, so you can enjoy the long, empty beaches, walk the sea-front or just chill with a sangria and enjoy the sea-views. Worth a day-trip for sure, but you'll come back for more ... Corralejo is fun, vibrant yet informal & chilled.

It's a reminder of how the people of Fuerteventura lived in the past. From the recent past where people survived in the hills and lived from the land, right back to prehistory where the Maxorata lived in caves and fished the abundant seas

The beach and caves at Ajuy are a beautiful way to spend a day. The beach is lovely with a few great bars and restaurants to refuel at ... but the main prize is a short walk along the cliff-path at low tide (please be aware that as the tide rises the caves are cut off by the sea ... so time your visit carefully) to the ancient caves. You'll pass the old lime pits where rocks were once baked to extract the lime to make primitive cement and mortar, and onto the epic and photogenic caves where you can explore and paddle in the shade. A wonderful way to spend a day

Ever wonder what the inside of an extinct volcano looks like? Well, within walking range (much easier by car) on the route from Origo Mare toward Lajares is Calderon Hondo, which towers above the town and is a fairly easy climb for those who like adventure. Park up and walk up from the edge of town (parking can be an issue so be prepared to park and walk) and ascend the volcano right to the top, where we get a view down into the caldera (the heart of the volcano). And when you're done, you're right next to Lajares which is a perfect spot for a pit-stop and a bite to eat.

Did Hitler really once stay here? Did he escape after the 2nd world war, get surgery and come to live in this villa? the answers to both are probably not, but the legend is one worth exploring for history buffs and legend seekers alike. Vists are sometimes rewarded by a guided tour, but this happens at the discretion of the custodian so please don't go expecting this. It's a great place to twin with a trip to Cofete beach ... which in itself is well worth the travel to reach

The island of Lobos (wolves) is located just off the north coast and is easy to reach by shuttle boat from Corralejo. It's an uninhabited island and a nature reserve, so if you want to try your hand at snorkeling or fancy a good walk around a deserted island then Lobos is incredible. Home to wildlife and with some great views of the ocean and back toward the island. It's well worth a day-trip to check out this little 'gem'

The sacred witch's mountain of Tindaya is both a history lesson and a wonderful walk. You can climb to the top, follow the path of the old pilgrimage or just stand at the bottom and marvel at the scenery. And when you're done the few bars in the town of Tindaya are perfect for a cooling beer or glass of vino

Betancuria is a small town located in the volcanic interior of the island. It's historic and quaint but the rugged landscape is perfect for adventurers who like to ride bikes, hike and get out into nature. It was the historic capital of the island after the Spanish conquest by Juan de Betancur. Now it's no longer the capital but it's a wonderful place to visit

The tiny coastal town of Los Molinos is a little gem, hidden from the normal tourist routes and has a natural shale beach, a single tapas restaurant and some of the most dramatic scenery on the island. If you're not there for the beach or the tapas, take the steep cliff path to the left of the road on the way in and scale the black, rugged cliffs for a view of the often raging and angry sea in this area that pounds the cliffs relentlessly. This view might just take your breath away
