My hometown Kassel

My hometown Kassel

City/town information

Even though the center of my life is in Berlin, I always enjoy being in Kassel and in the house where I spent my childhood and youth and with which I have many fond memories. Kassel offers everything your heart desires to have a good time: Art and culture, history, nature, shopping, all kinds of restaurants from good to upscale and, of course, the Kurhessen Therme, which will reopen in May 2022 after extensive renovation. A real highlight is the Documenta, which takes place every 5 years and brings many guests from all over the world to visit Kassel. Here are my personal tips for an all-round successful stay in this beautiful city in the center of Germany: Art, culture and nature: Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe (UNESCO World Heritage Site) - If possible, enjoy the view over Kassel from the Herkules Monument at sunset, when Kassel glitters in the light of the setting sun. A small snack and a drink should not be missing either. - explore the Bergpark and imagine the knights in the Löwenburg, even though it was only built during the reign of Elector Wilhelm I. - stand at the fountain pond in front of Wilhelmshöhe Palace and watch the water games beginning at Hercules from 14:30, culminating in a high fountain in the pond at 15:45 ( from 1.5. to 3.10. every Wednesday, Sunday and public holidays). - spend an evening under the chandelier with wonderful music in the ballroom after having admired the collection of paintings and antiques in Wilhelmshöhe Palace during the day. Karlsaue State Park - a walk through the floodplain and a coffee in the sunshine in front of the café in the Orangerie Wilhelmsthal Palace - as a child it was a tradition to go for a walk in the park of this most beautiful rococo castle in Germany at Easter and my father always managed to secretly hide Easter eggs - what fun! - and then there's the Wartturm, where I always thought Rapunzel was about to appear and let her hair hang down. https://museum-kassel.de/ This is then also the transition to the GRIMMWELT (https://www.grimmwelt.de/en/) - everything there is to discover and know about the Brothers Grimm and their wonderful fairy tales, and a little bit of being a child again. The documenta is, of course, the highlight for the art scene. From June to September 2022, Kassel attracts international attention and is a stage for modern and contemporary art. The flair in the city during this time is special - just like the exhibition itself. You should take your time, because the exhibition takes place in many places in Kassel and it is good to walk around the places, if possible, in order to let yourself drift again and surrender to what impresses, inspires, deludes and always makes the indelible Documenta. Neighborhoods

My favourite part of Kassel is only about 10 minutes away from my flat by public transport. The "Vorderer Westen" district stretches from the neoclassical Stadthalle to the lively Bebelplatz with its many shops and cafés to the trendy Friedrich-Ebert-Strasse. Characterised by many beautiful Wilhelminian style buildings, many streets invite you to take a stroll. Along Friedrich-Ebert-Strasse you can discover many concept stores and cafés and bars invite you to take a break. At number 101 you will find the shop "Stadtliebe", where you can find small fancy souvenirs to give away. Dinner Restaurants: For a fantastic Mediterranean dinner, I recommend the ENO wine bar not far from Bebelplatz. Be sure to make a reservation! (https://www.eno-weinbar.de/) The slightly smaller offshoot is also recommended and is called ENO Vino e Tapas - located at Friedrich-Ebert-Strasse 93. For fine dining, you should definitely make a reservation at Voit in Friedrich-Ebert-Strasse. (https://www.voit-restaurant.de/)
