Fort Scratchley, a former coastal defence installation, is now a museum. It is located in Newcastle East, overlooking Newcastle Harbour and Nobbys Beach. It was built in 1882 to defend the city against a possible Russian attack. This was one of the only forts in Australia that fired on Japanese submarines in WW2. Well maintained piece of local history.
