Our absolute favorite place to be. Technically, this is a restaurant and Inn but in reality, it's a best kept secret afternoon activity. Valet parking. On a sunny day, find an Adirondack chair and sit back and enjoy breathtaking views of Jamestown, Narragansett Bay and the comings and goings of sailboats. Drinks come to you from the kiosk bar set up on the Lawn. The lawn is first come first served. Reservations needed for meals on the patio terrace, but the bar is first come first served. They make the best lobster rolls in the state in our opinion. Affordably priced compared to the formal dining room. But don't let the weather stop you. Inside you can cozy by the fire and enjoy a hot toddy or settle yourself in the back room pub. You can order your meal at the bar or table. Appetizers, burgers, etc. Have never been disappointed. Very reasonably priced. The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming. My favorite place to go after a tiring morning of shopping for a civilized moment of calm and a bloody Mary. https://www.castlehillinn.com/dine/the-lawn/

This area of Newport has restaurants, albeit a bit touristy, shopping, street fairs, etc. You can catch the Jamestown Newport Ferry here. There are also sailboats to charter. Water view dining for sure but not always quality service and food. See our specific recommendations in Food Scene. https://bowenswharf.com/

Shops and boutiques galore. Thames is a very long street lined with many restaurants and shopping opportunities. Personally, I've never been able to walk the whole thing. It's best to pick areas and do shopping in bits. From Washington Square to Brick Alley to Bowen's Warf and beyond.

Rough Point Museum was the Newport home of heiress, collector, and philanthropist Doris Duke (1912-1993). Very impressive rooms and collection of art. Nice to walk around gardens. Beginning April 5: Tuesday-Friday: 10:00am-4:00pm Saturday-Sunday: 10:00am-5:00pm www.newportrestoration.org/roughpoint/

No visit to Newport would be complete without visiting the Gilded Age Cottages, as they are referred to. Of course, we call them Mansions today! They vary by style, age and size. Depending on the amount of time you have; it may be best to visit one thoroughly than three that blend together. They are numerous so it's best to plan ahead. Ask if you would like help deciding. I've been to each one at least 3 times so I can help guide your interests in the right direction. The gardens are also open for viewing and picnicking. My favorite is Marble House. It was modeled on the Petite Trianon in Versailles. I also love Alva Vanderbilt's gumption. It's easy to spend 1 hr or so to visit and then go enjoy lunch at the pavilion. Be sure to check schedules as they are constantly changing during renovations. Also, during the peak season it is best to get guided tour tickets in advance. https://www.newportmansions.org/

Scrumptious meals prepared with love and expertise. The service here is as good as any five star, present when needed but discrete. Whether seafood (cooked to perfection) or flatbread pizza, each plate has it's unique savory flavors. You can tell that fresh ingredients are used and home made. Reservations necessary. https://barcino.com/newport/

You will see us here most weekends. The staff and bartenders are the nicest most competent and efficient I have seen ever. American bistro cuisine. Craft cocktails $15+ Life music in what I call the "Safe" bar (because it was a former bank vault) and DJs upstairs in the Leopard Lounge. You won't be disappointed. The crowd is super cool too. https://www.barandboard.com/

The Vanderbilt is walking distance from downtown shops, albeit up a hill. Best kept secret is the rooftop bar with magnificent views of the bay. Dinner is also very enjoyable. https://aubergeresorts.com/vanderbilt/dine/

The Viking Hotel is a walk-able distance from Thames St. They have a delightful lobby and very friendly and experienced barman to mix your specialty cocktail, perhaps a Manhattan? There's a rooftop for those setting sun views. The vibe is a bit more casual here and relaxed. Groups will plop down in one of the seated areas but will also happily share space. As rooftops go, I prefer the view at the Vanderbilt. This one though is larger and has those toasty fire pits for humid evenings so we can linger. https://www.hotelviking.com/?utm_source=google-gmb&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gmb

Best chic spot for a drink and appetizers. Pricey. Very. If you're looking to be served with a calm smile away from the din of the tourists, this is the spot. Watch the yacht crews swabbing their immaculate decks. Settle in a comfortable sunny spot and celebrate the privilege of the view. https://www.41north.com/restaurants-bars/

Good restaurant for decent Italian food and pizza. Reasonably priced. The bar in the back is also an option for food or drink. I've been there several times and was always happy with service, the cuisine and the bill. https://www.pastabeach.com/newport

Parking

Parking in Newport after May 1st can be expensive and difficult. I'm including the official website for the city regarding parking: http://cliffwalk.com/ You can also often find parking behind the banks on Washington Square. 199 Connell Hwy They charge a fee $5 or $10 but it goes to a local charity that helps feed and clothe those in need. Another option is to find temporary street parking (un-metered) on Spring St. Just read the signs carefully as some street parking is reserved for residents only. The last option would be to use the shopping parking lot on Bellevue Ave and walk down.

Ferry to Newport

Avoid traffic and parking issues altogether and take a Ferry from Jamestown to Newport. I especially enjoy this option because the ride is part of the enjoyment! https://www.jamestownnewportferry.com/
