Food Scene

Perhaps one of Singapore's more famous hawker centres, newly renovated Newton Food Centre is popular with tourists and office workers who work nearby. Home to seafood eateries and iconic hawkers like Kwee Heng and Hup Kee fried oyster omelette, the centre's rich hawker history stretches back as far as the 1950s. While some may find the occasional food tout off-putting, it’s probably the only food centre where you can call ahead to reserve a table with your regular go-to seafood stall and have them attend to you. It closed down for minor renovations at the beginning of 2016 and reopened three months later with a slightly posher look with more spacious aisles and new toilets, tables and chairs. For beginners, don’t feel obligated to order from the hawker who got you a table, simply decline politely. If you are ordering seafood, watch them weigh it in front of you to avoid a surprise bill. More than just a hawker centre, the variety of good food and unique atmosphere makes any meal at Newton an experience to remember.

Arts & Culture

The National Museum of Singapore is the oldest museum in Singapore. Its history dates back to 1849, when it was started as a section of a library at Singapore Institution and called the Raffles Library and Museum. After several relocations, in 1887 it moved to its permanent site at Stamford Road in the Museum District. The museum focuses on exhibits related to the history of Singapore. It is one of four national museums in the country, the other three being the two Asian Civilisations Museums at Empress Place Building and Old Tao Nan School, and the Singapore Art Museum. It was named the National Museum of Singapore in 1965; between 1993 and March 2006, it was known as the Singapore History Museum. http://nationalmuseum.sg/
