Food scene

This is a gem of a place, so much so even Jay Rayner agrees! Food is incredible and the service really friendly and helpful. We love the fact everything is locally sourced - even some of the wines which hail from East Riding (and the owner helped pick the grapes!). There are two menus, one for lunch and an a la carte for something a bit more special. They regularly have tasting menus too so we’ll worth a visit.

The Terrace is a fabulous all rounder. Perfect eggs benedict and coffee for mornings after the night before, amazing burgers in the lunch menu and superb French fayre in the evenings. Cannot recommend enough. We also sometimes treat guests to their home made red velvet cake for checkin.

I’ve lost count of the times I’ve been to Digin’s. I love nipping in on my way to the cottage and chat to the guys who have often persuaded me to try something other than what I went in for and all the better for it! Their burger and dirty fries is a classic, but their festive toastie I think was a game changer. I wish they had it all year! Think roast organic Turkey, pigs in blankets, stuffing, cranberry mayo, Wensleydale and a dipping pot of home made Turkey gravy 🤤. They also cater for veggies and vegans so everyone’s a winner.

Originally starting life as a pop up I’m thrilled that the guys at Para Picar have become permanent residents in Saltaire. Tapas is a favourite of mine and it’s hard to find one as good as this in all of West Yorkshire. Everything from their home made tortilla to their crispy calamari are sensational. Tastes just like the real deal in San Sebastián!

The food at Edward St Bakery is outrageously good. When me and my photographer were doing a shoot of the cottage for the listing I went and grabbed us lunch (- halloumi and dhal sandwiches on the softest bread you’ve ever had with skinny fries on the side. After he’d eaten his I asked if he liked it - and he said ‘it was so good I ate it in 5 seconds and I don’t even know what it was’ 🤣. Pretty decent summary of the holy grail of sarnies. You can dine outside on benches (inside is too small for seating) or shop from their deli selection and take it back to the cottage to cook at home.

We’re not veggies but try our best to live responsibly and Rumpus burger mirrors our ethics perfectly. All their beef is from Colne just 22 miles away and 90% of their vegetable produce is from the same farm making their carbon footprint offset. They offer veggie and vegan alternatives too, all to be washed down with Saltaire beers (and wines and spirits) - what a treat. Great to eat in and take out alike this is a perfect Friday night sort of vibe.

Pubs

The Hermit is a fantastic pub owned by locals to Burley-in-Wharfedale and Burley Woodhead and you couldn’t wish for a friendlier welcome. The roaring log burner, fantastic food and rotating craft beers make this place a must visit. You won’t be sorry.

A must visit for craft beer lovers, and non craft beer lovers (I’m a lager drinker must to my husbands dismay). The cellar is artfully displayed behind the bar through a glass window. Fantastic atmosphere this independent is less than ten minutes walk from the cottage - and it’s downhill on the way home. #winning

You won’t find a friendlier Yorkshire welcome than at The Salt Cellar. Beautiful old building which retains what I call ‘a proper pub’ feel with a bar top oven full of pies and live music throughout the week. Excellent pit stop if you are making your way back into Saltaire ‘proper’ from Shipley.

Boasting the country’s largest tap room this former tram shed has been transformed into a proper evening destination. The pub at the front is perfectly fine, the pizzas are lovely actually, but the tap room is the jewel in its crown. Open only from 5pm this place hits up with a dj and enthusiast drinkers for a unique night out. Craft beers, lagers and the usual wine and spirits on offer.

No Saltaire guidebook should exclude Fanny’s Ale House, as no matter what you think about the current beer or gin selection it’s a Saltaire institution. Sir Titus Salt famously excluded pubs from his model village and residents were forbidden from indulging in the evil nectar, and so Fanny’s (named after one of his daughters) was never part of the original Saltaire plan. Ironically at home in a former police station this place is a must go to. The open fire and ‘proper boozer’ feel gives the perfect setting to while away an afternoon or evening.
