Food - Places to eat within .5 miles

When you finally need a break from the beach, exploring the Strand or roaming our historic neighborhoods, our island offers many opportunities for great meals. Luckily there are quite a few within .5 miles of the Captain’s Quarters!
Just .2 miles from Captain’s Quarters, the Grand Galvez, has been serving drinks and delicious meals since 1911. Perched high above the Seawall, she is truly our island’s Queen of the Gulf. With a beautiful lobby, outstanding bar and restaurant, and relaxing Adirondacks overlooking the beach, the Grand Galvez is a must visit! Be on the lookout for nights with live music and make sure you wander downstairs to the small history museum. Cheers and we may see you there as we go very often!

Did someone say all day breakfast??? Oh yes! Just .4 miles from the Captain’s Quarters Miller’s Seawall Grill has been serving up made to order omelette since 1976. If you go for breakfast…get there early! Our neighbors on the Seawall are very popular. They have great seafood if you decide not to go for breakfast as well.

As many have said, Sonny’s may not look like much but wow, they have been making up for it with food and atmosphere since 1944. Located just .4 miles from the quarters through the historic San Jacinto neighborhood, the hardest decision will be to get the burger or the muffuletta. There are many great muffulettas on the island but Sonny’s grilled version is certainly high on the list!!

Food - greater than .5 miles but some of our favorites!

Galveston is very easy to get around whether walking, biking, Ubering or driving. To us islanders, a couple miles feels like forever away. So, here is a list of some of our favorite places to eat great than .5 miles but no more than 5 miles. Bon appetit!
My favorite sandwich on the island and probably anywhere in the world is the Hot Italian from Pressbox. Throw in some tater tots and you are set. This sports bar-esque spot on Postoffice is .9 miles away, with a chill vibe and full of locals, it won’t disappoint.

If you are looking for a very nice place with absolutely amazing seafood, steaks, lamb, wine and all of the above, this is your spot. This is great for an island vacation splurge and date night. Historically known as the Wall Street of the South, the Strand has been welcoming visitors and businessmen alike for over 150 years. We love to go at golden hour, right before sunset, and witness the historic architecture soak up the last of the day’s sun. Be on the lookout for historic markers, live music, food and drinks. Also, if it is your thing, you can drink alcohol on the street. Cheers!

Most people may just think the Seawall is a pretty place to walk and see the beach. They would be partially correct. It also is a modern engineering marvel and has helped prevent Galveston’s destruction by hurricanes since is was started in 1902. From the apartment you can be to some of the most historic parts of the wall in .25 miles!

Located just 900 feet from the Captain’s Quarters, this historic Galveston orphanage and most probable place where most of our neighborhood sheltered during the Great Storm of 1900 is now a museum celebrating Texas and the American West. There is also live music and drinks on most Thursdays!

The Great Storm, explains the story of the 1900 hurricane that hit Galveston and became the deadliest natural disaster in America to this day. This is a great place to start your Galveston visit as it will show the resilience of this island city and its residents, included the family who developed the property where you are staying.

Neighborhood Strolls

If you look past the beach and the Strand, you may think there is nothing else to Galveston. But, beyond the miles of sandy shores, the beach bars and tourist hot spots, on our quiet oak and palm tree lined avenues and alleyways, you will find the Galveston that we love most! As you wander block after block, you can’t help but be transported to another time by our island’s stately historic structures. Galveston has 5 official historic districts but the opportunities for discovering historic architecture on the island are limitless. We cannot recommend strolling our historic neighborhoods with a cup of coffee and just soaking in the past enough!
You cannot miss Galveston’s richest gathering of 19th century homes in the East End Historical District. Located just east of downtown, you can wander Sealy, Ball, Broadway, Post Office, Church, Mechanic, Market, Winnie for hours and hours. From grand “castles,” Bishop’s palace, antebellum homes, to small shotgun style houses and more history and stories than you can imagine, make sure to look

Lost Bayou Historic District. This quiet, oak lined, historic neighborhood has beautiful more modest homes from the late 19th century and early 20th century (many homes built right after the Great Storm). But, where is the bayou??? The “lost” bayou was named Hitchcock’s Bayou and was completely filled in after the storm. So, this beautiful neighborhood is now, in some cases, built on top of a bayou. The Captain’s Quarters is just outside of this neighborhood and is actually built on top of a bayou as well!

The Silk Stocking Historic District. If you see someone out wandering 24th Street, drinking coffee and admiring this beautiful block, chances our, it’s me! I love to wander this early 1870s neighborhood and imagine finely dressed Galvestonians promenading the quiet streets while greeting each other graciously. I like to think that the Victorian ladies are sporting their fine silk fabrics that helped this neighborhood get its name.

Places to get a Cold Drink!

After a long, hot day on the sand and exploring our historic avenues, you definitely deserve a cold beverage of choice. Here are a few of our favorite places to get a drink!
Talk about history, beach views, and drinks all in one place! Murdochs and its forest of timber piles form previous foundations is the perfect ambassador and symbol of resiliency of Galveston. Originally built in the late 19th century as a Gulf coast bathing house, the Murdochs you see today is the 6th pier to be constructed on this spot. You can be sipping on a cold drink overlooking the Gulf after a .4 mile walk from the Captain’s Quarters. Cheers!

Galveston has a long, long history of breweries and great Texas beer! Today, Galveston Island Brewing (GIB) is carrying the torch forward. Beaches!

I know this one seems quite simple but, there are literally 27 miles of beaches to choose from on our beautiful sandbar. Here are a few pointers!
The quickest and easiest beach option for you in the Captain’s Quarters is to head out of the apartment walk to your right on 21st Street, walk .25 miles and your feet are in the sand and on the water! A lot of pros to this as you wont have to pay parking fees, Murdochs is nearby for any needs, you have a view of the Pleasure Pier. All in all, I recommend this! :)
