Rock Creek Hideaway in DC guidebook

Neighborhoods

Mount Pleasant is a neighborhood in the northwest D.C., it is bounded by Rock Creek Park to the north and west, with Adams Morgan to the south and the Columbia Heights to the east. Mount Pleasant is rare because it is able to provide a feeling of being in a historic row home neighborhood while still being in the district with quick access to restaurants, bars, movie theaters, shops, grocery and services. From Wikipedia: Mount Pleasant developed rapidly as a streetcar suburb after the expansion of … streetcars … in 1903. In 1973… a Lutheran group dedicated to social justice, bought a large building on Mount Pleasant Street and made it available rent-free to peace activists, pro-immigrant groups and musicians. In 1987, the neighborhood was designated as a historic district. As of 2021, the neighborhood was still a haven for immigrants, activists, punk rockers, entrepreneurs, revolutionaries and returning Peace Corps volunteers and retained the feel of a community set apart from downtown.

This is a great way to be able to check off seeing one of the cooler DC monuments... it gets its own island! Lyft , bike down or kayak here and get in a nature walk and without competing with a ton of people on the National Mall.

This is a really cool regional landmark, that is very easily accessed if you're equipped with a rental car, and ok with a 30 minute drive. Park in a lot, jump on a historic C&O canal walking trail and in minutes walk through some trees over to a great look out.

Samgöngur

Options from Mt. Pleasant (if you don't have a rental)

Walking: Most of the guidebook locations are walkable, and recommend it for the architecture and nature. If you're going down to the museums and monuments, think about breaking up the walking days during your visit. We have Lyft and Uber! Bus, Metro: We have several bus stops on our block ($2/ride). Red or Green line metro train is 20 min. walk away (get a metro card easily via Apple Wallet).

Reservations for dinner, events, music

DC is a small-big city. Before and after COVID-19, this city's most popular destinations often require tickets or reservations... this guide book includes some off the beaten path options so you may not have to worry as much with these but never hurts to check in advance how popular a restaurant or event may be. OH! and check out the local Sofar Sounds for seeing a show across the city (sometimes in someones backyard, or at an art museum).
Hvað á að taka með

What to bring, depending on season

Spring: Bring your patience. Often when tourists visit for Cherry Blossoms (bring your cameras), and when students visit for museums, etc. Summer: Sunscreen, and water bottle! It can get warm and you need to stay hydrated. Oh, and umbrella. Fall: Bring your cameras and layers. We sometimes will have heat late into the season, but include a light jacket. Winter: It doesn't get as cold as the Mid West or North East, but it can get into the 30s in the dead of winter - sometimes with high winds. So make sure to get a good coat, ear muffs and gloves. All year: Good walking shoes.
Sparnaðarleiðir

Choose how to spend your money

Of course if visiting the museums and monuments you’re not going out of pocket… but what about anything else? I always look each week at DCist, 730DC, Thrillist DC, an Eater DC to see what events are happening in town or new restaurants are opening. Many events are free like Jazz in the Sculpture Park, or outdoor movies at the Library of Congress.
