Food scene

Cosy little cafe with a great vibe and even better food, all sourced from their own little farm. Everything is made from scratch on site. Great for a long Sunday brunch and seriously good coffee and cake spot.

One of Hobart's best restaurants. Japanese Italian fusion, sounds strange but tastes amazing. All about exceptional Tasmanian produce prepared in inventive ways. Check out the gazillion online reviews if you don't believe me. Atmosphere is relaxed, not at all snooty.

This place is particularly fun when the sun is out and the al fresco scene really comes to life. Good breakfast spot and good for accommodating large groups. It transitions from a cafe by day to a bar in the evenings with wood fired pizzas.

By the creative team behind Dark Mofo, comes this incredible space that is home to a bunch of foodie outlets and bars. Best place for a drink and a snack in the city.

Just a great local place for a drink. Nice atmosphere. Open fires rambling alfresco when the weather is fine.

Gourmet supermarket / wine store. The fresh food here is incredibly well priced (cheaper than Woolies) and a much nicer experience and our closest supermarket. Win win win.

We particularly love the take away woodfired pizzas from this place but also great for casual meals. Funky interior and great staff. Great chai and muffins too. Very close to the house and close to the train park for those with little people.

The best meal of my life was enjoyed here at The Agrarian Kitchen. The team here are absolute wizards. And the ethos of farm to plate is simply inspiring. Worth every cent. The alcohol-free drink pairings are extraordinary, you can drink alcohol anywhere so when you’re here opt for the non-alcoholic and be ready to be wowed.

Kind of a Hobart institution! If you haven't done the Salamanca markets on a Saturday morning, it's worth checking out. It's a bit touristy but has a nice atmosphere.

The Knocklofty reserve / walking trails are just behind our house! Walk up Summerhill Rd and then right into Bimbadeen Cr, walk to the end and you will see a staircase on the left. Walk up stairs to the trails. Enjoy a short bushwalk or run here first thing in the morning, a great way to start your day. You can walk through the trails to South Hobart too.

No caption required! You are sure to know all about MONA, and of course you should plan a visit here and dedicate a day to it. To make it really special, it's nice to take the ferry from Salamanca into Berriedale (MONA location). It's about a 25min ferry ride.

Just one of our fav local beaches, especially the dog beach, down the far end where the river meets the sea. Amazing for little kids, lots of little shallow pools that get pretty warm in Summer. Good short walk options from the beach to Alum Cliffs and Boronia Beach on the other side of beach.

Another favourite local beach. Beautiful cliffs to one side and glorious clean water. Most spectacular on a really still, sunny day.

This is a lovely, gentle walk (or even better as a bike ride) in the beautiful area of Ferntree. As the name suggests, the walk in flanked with ferns. Recommend starting and finishing at the Ferntree Tavern and treating yourself to an amazing cake apres walk.

Kinda a must do when in town. Make sure you pick the right day for it though as it's no use going up there when it's cloudy! Pack your puffa jacket and if you've got the time, it's nice to take a few hours to walk up from the bottom. Not difficult and yet hardly anyone does it! Lovely amble through the bush and well deserved viewing spot from the top.
