Great walks. Many great and varied restaurants and food bars. Great pizza. Take a walk to the lookout then come back into town for coffee or a meal. Very popular coastal town short drive north of Ballina. Great surf.

Nice seaside town. Beautiful river and beaches. Reasonable eateries. Good walking trails.

Bangalow

Picturesque town with nice eateries. Good markets when on. Short drive from Ballina. Have a stop off on your way to other venues except on Market days which is well worth a few hours to look around and find some nice food.

City/town information

Byron Bay

Hectically busy small coastal town. Parking always at a premium and expensive. In peak times up to an hour just to get into town so plan ahead. Some good back streets for free parking. Good restaurant scene and great walk to the lighthouse. Best to start at Byron Beach, walk along the beach to 'The Pass' then follow the walking track from 'The Pass' carpark to Watego's Beach and along to the lighthouse. Steep walk with lots of stairs. But worth the effort. Couple of nice eateries along the way. Lots to do and see in town and worth a day trip or two. Good surf, surf schools and kayak tours.

Ballina is a fairly quiet town about 20minutes drive south of Byron Bay. Some great beach's and waterways that offer swimming, surfing, kayaking and fishing. There are numerous designated walk/cycleways with some great viewing area's for whale watching during the season. Ballina Council has a great site with a map displaying local walking tracks. The restaurant scene is reasonable but improving all the time. Not a great deal in the way of nightlife, still a fairly sleepy little town. There are a couple of shopping precincts with the usual variety of supermarkets and specialty stores. Ballina is pretty central to all of the Northern Rivers attractions and only an hours drive from Queensland.
