A Russian café & bakery, if you are looking to try something different have their Borscht soup, great brekky options. They do the best desserts in the area, I recommend the Pancho cake.

Lounge & Night Life

Imagine entering a modern Colosseum through an elliptical corridor. Right in front of you, there’s an amphitheatre overlooking an infinity pool, merging with the blue ocean. That’s Potato Head Beach Club, opened in 2010 in Seminyak and designed by architect Andra Matin – another perfect sunset spot, best enjoyed with cocktails and tapas. Some pretty epic DJs have played here too, so if you’re keen for a dance, this is the place to do it.

The waves that break in Canggu captivate surfers and sunset-seekers alike. Here you’ll find a community of compelling contrasts, with modern boutiques and hipster lounges flanking rice paddies and local warungs. Although not the most idyllic stretch of sand in Bali, Echo Beach is renowned for its laid-back atmosphere and delicious seafood. The best time to visit is between April and October, after Bali’s rainy season. Just watch out for the heat that gets caught in the black sand beneath your feet.

Sightseeing

Known as a spectacular sunrise spot in Bali, not many tourists realize that Mount Batur is actually one of the four primary sacred mountains on the island. Despite being the smallest among the four, Mount Batur is one of the most active volcanoes on the island, sitting on a huge crater formed from when it erupted thousands of years ago. Legend has it that when a massive eruption happened in 1926, a whole village was wiped out, but a holy shrine inside the mountain’s temple was perfectly preserved. Due to its lively volcanic activity, the mountain is believed to be the dwelling place of Lord Brahma, who is often symbolized with a fire ring. Locals bring forth sacrifices and offerings to this mountain during sacred ceremonies to purify the area from evil and keep a balance among the universe’s elements. Bali is home to outstanding volcanic peaks, reaching around 3,000m (9,800ft) above sea level. What’s more exciting than hiking at night to reach the summit and have the sun rising on your tired muscles? It will set the tone of your holiday, energizing and reinvigorating both body and spirit. You can enjoy an unforgettable hike up Mount Batur at sunrise.

Local Hindus believe the sacred water flowing at the Tirta Empul Temple, in the village of Manukaya, has the power to heal and cleanse the body and soul. Whether or not you believe this, soaking in the spring water at a serene, beautiful temple is an experience not to be missed. The temple takes 30 minutes to an hour to explore and you’ll have to wear a sarong, which you can borrow at the entrance for a small donation.

Perched on the jungle slopes of the sacred Mount Agung is the great Besakih [Mother] Temple, a supremely holy place. The compound comprises 18 temples scattered over a vast area, making Besakih the biggest temple in Bali. It is said that the temple was first built by a Hindu devotee from India named Rsi Markandeya, and it has since become the centre of religious activities for the whole island. This temple is open to the public, but some parts are strictly reserved for religious activities. To enter this temple, tourists are required to wear conservative clothing that covers their body, including their chest, arms and legs.

Lempuyang Luhur Temple is one of the oldest temples in Bali, sitting on the peak of Mount Lempuyang in East Bali. It’s definitely not easy to climb up the 1,700 steps to the temple, but bite your tongue before you moan about it – locals believe that those who complain will never make it to the top. Legend has it that it was built when Mother Earth was only 70 years old, along with a couple of other temples – a project initiated by Lord Pashupati and his children to help stabilize the island’s nature. The temple is especially crowded during Hindu holy days and during the full moon, when devotees embark on a pilgrimage to seek blessings and holy water.

There are many features that make this forest worthy of its widespread hype: the lush tropical jungle, hundreds of friendly monkeys, ancient architecture and the overall calming ambiance in the heart of Ubud. But this area is more than just a habitat for monkeys and trees. It also houses three holy temples: the main temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Holy Spring Temple with the gushing holy water is dedicated to the goddess Ganga, and a cremation temple that also serves as a place to worship is dedicated to Lord Brahma Prajapati. The temples are open only for religious activities, but tourists can still observe the symbolic sculptures and architecture. Even the trees species in the forest are significant in Balinese spiritual customs; many are regarded as sacred and often used during religious rituals.

If vast white sands and clear blue water is your ultimate beach scene, then Pandawa Beach is the place for you. Often dubbed as a “secret beach” in Kutuh Village, South Kuta, the beach has a lot to offer. You can chill under one of the big umbrellas for rent, challenge the steady waves canoeing, or play with the smooth sand. A few hundred metres to the land, you can find man-made caves with statues of the five Pandawas, the heroes of the Mahabaratha epoch; proving this beach is as rich in culture as it is in scenery.

Mainly known for its appearance in the romantic movie Eat, Pray, Love, this southern beach lives up to the hype. Like a small secret nook, the beach is surrounded by cliffs and corals, as if hidden from the outside world. The view is perfect for the eye, and the waves are excellent for your adrenaline. As the nearest beach from the heart of the city, Legian beach is often considered one of the most mainstream beaches in Bali. While there are many other beaches with prettier views than Legian beach, people keep coming back for the lively vibe and various activities, such as surfing and horse-riding. Lined along the coast are cozy cafés with bean bags on the sand – a perfect way to enjoy a cold beer and the sunset view. Legian's charm extends from the beach, with hundreds of local shops and restaurants along the neighboring streets.

Named for the color and curve of its beach, Green Bowl is quieter than its southern coast neighbors, due to its canopy-enclosed seclusion and steep, stair-lined descent. Shouldered by towering limestone cliffs pocketed with caves and lapped by surf-ready tides, this beach draws sporting types and those seeking solitude. Be aware that you’ll need the stamina to make the ascent back up the cliff, but it’ll be worth it.

The Gili Islands—made up of Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air—are a 1.5 hour boat ride from Bali and off the coast of Lombok Island. Known for their white sand beaches and Caribbean-blue waters, the islands are a magnet for couples, backpackers, divers and partiers alike. Of the three islands, Gili Trawangan is the most developed and a popular haunt for the young backpacking crowd. Gili Air & Gili Meno are more quieter and serene, if you are looking for a getaway from it all, these are the two islands I recommend.

Cross the Badung Strait and you’ll find yourself on the hilly island of Penida. To reach the gleaming sands of Diamond Beach on the island’s eastern edge, you must make the bracing descent down stone steps carved into the limestone cliff-face, trailed by a rope handrail; look out on your way down to see manta rays swimming below. Diamond-shaped rocks, turquoise waters and green-topped rock formations are your rewards at the bottom. While on Nusa Penida, don’t miss Kelingking Beach and Broken Beach on the other side of the island.
