Culzean is approximately 35 minutes drive from the cottage. The castle is a National Trust property which has an entry fee for the grounds and the castle. There is a sign posted coastal route which offers spectacular views across the Firth of Clyde to Arran and Alisa Craig, also drive on the Electric Brae. The castle has beautiful woodland walks and shoreline walks to explore. A tour round the castle is recommended to find out the history. For the children there is an excellent adventure park where they will easily fill an hour or two.

Robert Burns Birthplace Museum offers a truly unique encounter with Scotland’s favourite son. Robert Burns is Scotland’s National Bard, and his poetry and songs are known and loved the world over. But who was he and what made him tick? The best place to get close to Burns and his genius is his birthplace in the beautiful village of Alloway. Our flagship museum starts a journey that weaves through the village, taking you from historical buildings to landmarks known to Burns. Whether you’re a die-hard Burnsian or brand new to the bard, a day immersing yourself here will open your eyes and ears to an enduring hero of Scotland’s literary heritage. Visit www.nts.org.uk for full details and entry costs.

Walking

The Isle of Arran is a 40 minute ferry journey from the town of Ardrossan (25 minutes by car from our cottage). Goat Fell is the highest peak on the Isle of Arran, and the perfect viewpoint to gaze across the island and out to sea. The mountain stands sentinel above Brodick Castle and reaching the summit takes between 2 and 5 hours, so pack plenty of supplies and make sure you are properly equipped. But we think the views of Jura and Ben Lomond are worth it – on a clear day you can even see as far as Ireland. The Goatfell property also includes 2,400ha of mountain environment and moorland including Glen Rosa, a spectacular example of a landscape shaped by glaciers.
