City/town information

The thriving town of Horsham may look modern, but it dates back to at least the 10th century. The parish church of St Mary dates to the 12th century and stands at one end of a long street known as The Causeway, lined with attractive old houses. One of the most famous residents of Horsham was the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, whose monument can be found in the church. Horsham is now a bustling town, with weekly markets and Swan Walk shopping centre which has a large variety of larger stores, NEXT, M&S etc and many individual boutiques and coffee shops. Perhaps the most striking historic building in Horsham is the old Town Hall on Market Square, erected in 1812 by the Duke of Norfolk on the site of a late medieval market hall. Many of the surrounding buildings on Market Square are timber-framed, refaced in later materials.

The Parish Church of St. Mary the Virgin is the oldest existing building in Horsham. It has been associated with the life and worship of the community and has been in continuous use for nearly eight centuries. Its picturesque location at the end of the Causeway, the focal point of today’s conservation area, links it with the town it serves, and the peal of 10 bells rung regularly from the tower can be heard throughout the surrounding area.
