This exquisite town is on the edge of the Cotswolds facing the River Avon. The ancient bridge in the centre of the town remains its natural focus and the bridge still retains two of its original 13th century arches. It also sits next to the canal and you can hire bikes or walk along the canal and enjoy the beauty and peace of the countryside here. There are wonderful things to see, eat and visit. Recommended for a couple of hours. The train ride is only 10 minutes from Bath. On the way back, why not stop off at the wonderful village of Freshford nestled by the river Frome ideal for long lazy walks in the ancient woodland then a swift drink in the historic Freshford Inn.

Walk through history from an Iron Age hill fort to 18th-century follies and stroll through hidden valleys, woodlands and patchworks of small meadows, all rich in wildlife. This walk burns as much energy as playing 90 minutes of football, according to research! So recommended before a late lunch in Bath. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/bath-skyline will help you with the routes you can take.

Built in 1805 it is described by the Theatre’s Trust as ‘one of the most important surviving examples of Georgian theatre architecture’. Comprising of three auditoria, the Main House, Ustinov Studios and the egg theatre for children, a wonderfully varied programme of entertainment is offered all year round. Jane Austen set two of her six published novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, in Bath and made the city her home from 1801 to 1806. The Jane Austen Centre is dedicated to celebrating Bath’s most famous resident. The Centre offers a snapshot of what it would be like to live in the Regency times – the fashion, food, society – everything that would have inspired Austen’s timeless novels. A must for all Jane Austen fans. www.janeausten.co.uk

Bath became a World Heritage Site in 1987, largely because of its architectural history and the way in which the city landscape draws together public and private buildings and spaces. Walking around the City Centre will give a good feel for the Georgian style, but don’t miss the famous Royal Crescent, Great Pulteney Street, Pulteney Bridge and The Circus.
