Here are our top recommendations for getting out and about. Taking a drive or cycle down the Atlantic west coast with beach after beach is a must, but it would be a shame to leave Harris without exploring the rockier East coast towards Scalpay or through the Bays of Harris. If you have time, take the road to Huisinis too. Take a picnic or plan your food stop before you go.
Luskentyre beach is Harris' most famous beach and it is a great place for a walk or a swim in the ocean if you're brave enough. It is easy to access from beside the new cemetery at Luskentyre Road end or through the dunes beside the old cemetery. We like to walk from one to the other.

You can see the distillery from our house and it's a very, very short walk! Visit the shop to stock up on Harris gin. The cafe is currently closed but the very enjoyable tours are running again and the distillery shop is still worth a visit.

Drive or cycle this scenic road through the Bays of Harris. It's called the Golden Road because it cost so much to build it. Allow plenty of time because it is single track and winds its way around the East Coast all the way down to Rodel in the south. It's a good place to visit galleries and to spot wildlife. You are guaranteed to see seals on the rocks just offshore at Quidinish.

On the road to Huisinis, you might want to take a detour to the eagle observatory. It's a relatively short, mostly flat walk and you might even spot a Golden Eagle.

The road to Huisinis is 18 miles of scenic, winding, single track road and one of our favourite drives. At the most elevated points, the views are spectacular and you will pass through the grounds of Amhuinnsuidhe Castle Estate where you might spot salmon leaping in July and August. If you persevere on, you will eventually reach Huisinis with its lovely beach and stunning views.
