In the summertime, do bring a swimsuit and swimming sandals or shoes. The docks outside OMSI (just a little north of the building) by Alder Creek Kayak are a great place to live like a local and get a little urban swimming in.

Sightseeing
You can rent from them and roll your kayak or paddleboard down the paved sidewalk to the docks at Willamette Park. This is a great way to see a bit of the city (and then jump in to cool off!) You can also take lessons if you reserve in advance! Great group activity! (With Paddle Boards you can also rent for some big SUP events like the Witches Paddle near Halloween or the Santa Paddle in December).

Prepare to dress in layers!
While we typically enjoy a moderate climate here in Portland, temperatures often fluctuate 30 degrees (or more!) from dawn until dusk. We recommend comfortable layers. Summertime travelers: river jumping in the Willamette is a popular pastime. (I so love this!) Especially when temperatures soar. Bring a swimsuit and swimming sandals/shoes (bottom of the river is both muddy and rocky).
