Sightseeing

Lots of amazing places right here in Bynum or a short drive away.
The view from the old bridge over the Haw River is absolutely beautiful. The bridge is also a bit of a cultural landmark: for its graffiti; for how many band photos have been taken there; for community events; and for the fact that it used to be the bridge on the old road that connected Pittsboro to Chapel Hill. The fact that cars can’t drive on the bridge make it a wonderful setting for walking, skateboarding, biking, rollerblading, etc. There is a “secret path” from our house straight to the bridge. You walk right into the church’s gravel parking lot and to the right of their shed, you will see a very established trail down through the woods. People are free to walk through the church’s parking lot.

Clyde’s Critter House is literally a two-minute walk up Bynum Hill Road, and he loves visitors, especially those from out of town! If you are from another country, he will likely go inside and ask you to sign his “autograph” book, which has dozens of people in it from far-flung corners of the globe, including the famous dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov. You might notice that Clyde’s “critters” adorn almost every house in Bynum; he believes his art unifies the community by being in so many yards. His art is also at military bases, houses, and museums throughout the world, “from Russia to Zimbabwe” he likes to say. It’s worth noting that Clyde does not sell his art: he gives it away, sometimes just because he likes someone but often as a donation to a cause he believes in for a future fundraising raffle. There’s a good chance you’ll see Clyde driving his lawnmower around Bynum; it’s how he gets around. It’s also his way of keeping his eye on his critters and our neighborhood. He’s like a combination of a town mayor, a visionary artist, and a watchman. Who else has an entire festival named after them? (Clydefest occurs every April on the Bynum Ball Field.)

Go sit on the village commons or catch a movie at Southern Village. Towards Chapel Hill, it’s a sweet modern town about 10 minutes away.
