Food scene

Cute patio under a (messy) Oak tree with the classic string of lights, and the closest dining to Whiskey Hollow. We love the Fried Chicken Sandwich and the Nasty Ned.

We have our own creation we like to call "The A-Frame". You'll have to order it a la carte, since they don't know we've named it: Pepperoni, salami, pineapple and jalapenos--delicious! Tip: Try honey on the crust!

Standard Chinese food, but better ambience than iWok down the street.

Step inside and you are transported to Hawai'i! Start with the sweet potato fries (order a small unless there are at least three of you), then get the fish with wasabi cream sauce--soooo good! This place can get busy, so get there early or expect to wait.

Music + Food

We haven't tried this place yet, but it's getting rave reviews on Yelp, and features bands you may have never heard of (but we're guessing they're probably pretty good).

Neighborhoods

We love our little mountain town! Felton has a little bit of everything: restaurants, markets, shops. If you're a fan of funky, small hardware stores (and we are--are there more like us?) then check out the Ace Hardware on the corner of Highway 9 and Mt. Hermon Road. At Christmas, the large tree near White Raven (cute local coffee shop) has lights on it--it's not the most classically-shaped tree, so Paige calls it "The Jellyfish". If you've been to Monterey Bay Aquarium, maybe you've seen those tiny jellies that have little rainbow lights that move up their sides?

Santa Cruz has lots to offer, so we'll just mention our don't-misses: Check out Santa Cruz Bookshop on Pacific Avenue, watch the surfers and the waves from West Cliff Drive (it starts near the wharf and the Boardwalk), ride a vintage wooden roller coaster at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, then walk down to the end of the wharf to Stagnaro's and order what we consider to be the best Bloody Mary around. Note: Pacific Avenue can be a little gritty--not dangerous, but you may encounter panhandlers and some of the local homeless.

Sightseeing

Roaring Camp & Big Trees Narrow Gauge Railroad is a 3 ft narrow-gauge tourist railroad (no loads of lumber running by in these babies!) that starts from the Roaring Camp depot in Felton, and runs up steep grades through redwood forests to the top of nearby Bear Mountain, a distance of 3.25 miles. At Christmas they put lights on the train and cruise down to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk--charming and fun for all! You should try to buy tickets in advance for the Christmas train, as they may sell out.

Check out wwwsantacruz.org for info on local events.

www.santacruz.org has an active calendar of all of the events happening nearby up and down the coast. Some are recurring events at local institutions, some are seasonal and others are one-time or annual events. This is such a rich area for both nature and culture, you may have a tough time deciding how to spend your day (but we think this is a good problem to have....)
