Turoa skifield is located on the southwest slope of Mt Ruapehu, centered in Tongariro World Heratage National Park. it is considered by many as the best natural terrain skifield in NZ, and tends to have a deeper snow base than the northern skifield Whakapapa.

Best mountain bike trail (or day trip hike) in the area. grade two, 15km long trail, predominantly down hill if you start at the Horipito end. it ends in Ohakune. The old coach road is the orriginal cobblestone paved, horse drawn wagon trail around the southeastern lower slopes of Mt Ruapehu, and was made to help build the last section of NZ's railroad. it passes the now abandoned viaduct bridges and tunnel that were part of the orriginal train tracks. https://www.mountainbikestation.co.nz/ohakune-old-coach-road.html

this is my second favorite activity in the area. accessed either by 35km mountain bike trail, jet boat ride up wanganui river or canoeing safari. the beatiful arched car bridge, that has no road on the far side (it goes nowhere), is the remainder of a new road project that was abandoned in 1930's. the road is being reclaimed by nature, but kept open as a bike trail. https://www.doc.govt.nz/mangapurua-kaiwhakauka-track https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/manawatu-whanganui/places/whanganui-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/bridge-to-nowhere-walk/

rated #1 daytrip hike in NZ. hike over the volcano that gives it's name to the World Heritage National Park. this 20km hike across an active volcanic landscape is a must on everyone's bucket list. moderate fitness required and weather dependant. the volcano is an alpine environment and can get snow anytime of year, so check the forecast and wear appropriate clothing and footwear. walking tge trail it is free to do, but you will need to pay for a shuttle service. if self driving, it is free to park your car at northern end on road side, and then pay for bus shuttle to trail start at south end (be warned there is a strict 4 hour parking restriction at south end carpark.) https://www.tongarirocrossing.org.nz/

Whakapapa skifield is on the northern slope of Mt Ruapehu, and has an abundance of ski chalets on the slopes and a new gondola that runs winter and summer up to the restaurant on the volcano. this is worth the trip for sightseeing and skiing.
