The castle is located in the northwestern part of the city of Kalamata, on a low rocky hill above the river Nedontas. Its foundation dates back to the Byzantine period, but its current form is due to its reconstruction by the Frankish prince and founder of the principality of Achaia, Godfrey I Villehardouin, in the early 13th century.

Γειτονιές

The port of Kalamata began to be populated from the western beach. It was there that the pre-revolutionary years began, with warehouses, shops and the Customs taking shape. Back then sea transport was done by boats and barges. Today, in the port of Kalamata, a central position is occupied by the Customs Square, dominated by the administrative building of the same name and the port authority. It is a complex of first and second floor buildings, with neoclassical elements. Just to the west of the square one will see the huge building of the Autonomous Raisin Organization. A little west of the Customs House, is the city's marina, which gathers a number of restaurants in front of the sea. Continuing to the east of the port of Kalamata, dominates the abandoned industrial building of the Rolling Mills of Messinia "Evangelistria", a cultural heritage monument built in 1926 and reminiscent of another era, when the port of Kalamata was flooded with merchants and was the center not only of Messinia , but also of all of Greece. Continuing east from the port of Kalamata you will reach the beach of the city, which is crossed by Navarinou Avenue with its long sidewalks, palm trees, neoclassical buildings of the early 20th century and of course the sandy beach. There, where in the morning all the people swim, in the evening they go for a walk.
