Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park, or ‘GWK’, is within a 20-minute drive southwest from the main Nusa Dua hub, up in the hills of Ungasan. The centerpiece is the to-be-assembled gigantic statue that depicts the typical artistic Balinese rendering of Hindu god Vishnu, riding on the back of the mythical Garuda eagle. The current separate parts, such as the upper head and the torso form different compounds within the complex, and the Garuda head forms the main backdrop of the vast ‘lotus pond’ multifunction area, where rock concerts and lavish banquets have been held. Segway tours are available onsite.

Pandawa Beach, or ‘Pantai Pandawa’ among locals, features a kilometer-long coast that is ‘hidden’ behind limestone cliffs. The beach is within eight kilometres’ drive southwest from the main Nusa Dua hub. The beach offers impressive ocean panoramas and huge limestone cliffs that were cut through to make way for its winding road. The ocean-facing cliffs down the slope feature deeply carved arches installed with large statues, each depicting a hero from the Mahabharata epic, the ‘five Pandawas’, hence the name of the beach. Numerous water sport gear rentals and restaurants serving snacks and refreshments line the beach.

This natural phenomenon happens when waves hit the narrow space within the rock cliff where pressure builds, and water then blows up! And remember; be careful to keep a distance to avoid getting wet.

In fact, what’s left of this little slice of paradise is a hideout for passionate beach-goers looking for a break from the crowd. The place is popular with local expats rather than tourists, no surprises since they are probably residents in the high-end locality. While you enjoy your quiet afternoon by the sand and sea, don’t forget to visit its seaweed farms, where the plants are harvested to produce cosmetics. You can even spot the farmers at work on the beach. With calm and crystal clear water, Geger Beach is also perfect for swimmers and snorkellers. Its seaweed farms attract spectacular reef fish into the shallow waters too!

Right here in Nusa Dua, you can imagine yourself treasure-hunting while you dine at The Pirates Bay. The outdoor setting is perfect to catch the sea breeze while hanging out at your chosen spot – a replica pirate ship on the sand, a tree house, a bay lookout tower, or even a pirates’ kitchen! Scattered around the grounds are numerous castaway-inspired setups such as thatch-roofed beach huts, bonfires, tents, and picket fences that are nods to Robinson Crusoe, Jack Sparrow and everything ‘piratesque’.

It does not get better than this, getting up close and personal with the fish and stunning aquatic life – you won’t even get your hair wet. Just a short boat trip from the Grand Mirage Resort takes you to the purpose built ‘dive site’. Prepare to be amazed as you put on your special helmets and descend down the steps into the aquatic paradise. You can hand feed the fish (how fun!), or just watch as they swim around the unbelievably gorgeous live coral formations. Our favourite bit? You get to look like an Astronaut in the cool space age helmets. The kids will be so excited about showing these photos off when they get back to school.

The two Nusa Dua islands are where this whole area got its name from. Actually meaning ‘two islands’ in the local tongue, Nusa Dua surrounds a small bay that offers great swimming, and both of the islands host a set of unique attractions. The southern island is slightly larger than the northern one, featuring a vast grassy field where numerous international events and banquets have been held. On any other day, it is a great recreational area dotted with sparsely spaced and shaded pavilions, and several monuments. A small temple, Pura Bias Tugel, is nearby on the sandy area, and at the rocky hills bordering the sea is the ‘water blow’ that offer a spectacle of crashing waves against the rocks
