In XVII century Memelburg castle was built and the city started to create at the meeting of River Memel and Dane. 500 years later during the Napoleon wars the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III resided in Klaipeda. In his honor the expanding territory around the Memelburg castle got the name of Friedrich city. Friedrich‘s arcade that opened its doors in 2006 combines not only this historic spirit with traditional Lithuanian hospitality, but also expands the concept of modern rest, leisure time and entertainment.

HUMAN IMPACT TO THE LANDSCAPE Due to extensive forest clear cuttings, especially after the Seven-Year War (1756-1763), wind erosion appeared. Wind reshaped old parabolic dunes, forming new relief. The Great Dune Ridge started to grow. It buried 14 villages under the thick layer of sand: Naumiestis, Priedinis, Senieji and Naujieji Nagliai, Karvaiciai, Senieji Kuncai, Naujoji Pilkopa, Senoji Nida and others. The sand threatened humans, so they started looking for ways to tame it. At the beginning they were building wooden barriers, which helped very little.

The Oldest Theatre Building in Lithuania in the Wetlands of Danė. The exact inception date of Klaipėda Drama Theatre is still unknown. In the 18th century city plans there is a square-planned building near the trenches of castle and Danė marked as “The House of Comedy“ which was used for military purposes in the past. It was located on the state ground, taxes for which were paid by the city, which indicates that that the first Klaipėda Drama Theatre was owned by magistracy.
