Urquhart Castle is one of the most picturesque landmarks in Scotland, and an iconic sight to all those who have travelled between Fort William and Inverness. Perched on the banks of Loch Ness beside the village of Drumnadrochit, it commands great views up the length of the loch, and is one of the main sites for reported sightings of the legendary Loch Ness Monster.

Fort George is the mightiest artillery fortification in Britain. Following the 1746 defeat at Culloden of Bonnie Prince Charlie, George II created the ultimate defence against further Jacobite unrest. The result, Fort George, is the mightiest artillery fortification in Britain, if not Europe. Its garrison buildings, artillery defences bristling with cannon, and superb collection of arms - including bayoneted muskets, pikes, swords and ammunition pouches - provide a fascinating insight into 18th century military life.

Dunrobin Castle is the most northerly of Scotland's great houses and the largest in the Northern Highlands with 189 rooms. Dunrobin Castle is also one of Britain's oldest continuously inhabited houses dating back to the early 1300s, home to the Earls and later, the Dukes of Sutherland. The Castle, which resembles a French chateâu with its towering conical spires, has seen the architectural influences of Sir Charles Barry, who designed London’s Houses of Parliament, and Scotland’s own Sir Robert Lorimer. The Castle was used as a naval hospital during the First World War and as a boys’ boarding school from 1965 to 1972.

As one of the most iconic images of Scotland, Eilean Donan is recognised all around the world. Situated on an island at the point where three great sea lochs meet, and surrounded by some majestic scenery, it is little wonder that the castle is now one of the most visited and important attractions in the Scottish highlands.

Parks & Nature

An unusual monument representing the Gate of Negapatam, a port in Madras, India sits atop Cnoc Fyrish and can be seen from most of the surrounding areas. Built by the local lord who served as a General in India, the construction kept the locals in work during the Highland Clearances. It's rumoured that General Munro and some of his men would summit the hill at nights to return some of the stones to the bottom in order to create extra work for the labourers. Atop the hill, there are some excellent views from the top and it's not too challenging a climb so suitable for all ages.

Food Scene

This is a favourite with locals, a queue up canteen style service but with quality as well as quantity. This is the type of place where you can get anything from the day’s roast, a curry, fish & chips to a soup and a sandwich or a quiche. Sit outside in the heated gazebo for outstanding views over the Cromarty Firth.

Similar idea to Storehouse of Foulis, but perhaps not quite as good. Also lacks “the view”. It is however a good place for a quick meal or a coffee and cake.

Probably more of an evening meal, this is a big feed for your money. Fairly traditional Scottish & British fare and always a good quality (and far too much quantity), but I would recommend elsewhere if you’re in a rush.

This is right next to the A9 at the north turn-off for Dornoch. It’s good-quality safe and standard Scottish pub food, but 90% of the customers all order the same thing, the sizzling steak platter. This isn’t fine dining, but who doesn’t enjoy a sizzling hot platter with a lump of steak, chips, onion rings, tomato, red cabbage, carrots and peas on it?

A fairly varied but excellent quality menu with stunning views almost as good as those here in this house. Traditionally furnished inside with stained oak walls, if you didn’t realise you were in Scotland beforehand, you’ll certainly feel it after. The two best seats in the house are the armchairs next to the roaring fire – the perfect place for a Scotch whisky after your meal.

this is arguably the busiest restaurant around. It’s vibe is a mix of modern city with traditional Scotland. There’s also a balcony with outdoor dining space overlooking the Ness River in the heart of Inverness. A large and varied menu, this is a firm and regular favourite with locals and tourists alike. Booking will likely be required.

Inverness's "hidden gem". It’s not so much that it’s hidden, it’s just that it’s very small. The dining area itself will be no bigger than the kitchen at this AirBnB, but the traditional Italian food is outstanding. You might struggle to get near this at the weekend without booking well in advance, but through the week you’ll probably strike gold.
