This is a relatively new restaurant on Broughton Street, they have a huge pizza oven and serve delicious Mediterranean food. We love the sharing Mezze platter! It is quite small, so worth booking a table at peak times. It's B.Y.O.B.

This is a favourite place to go for a treat. It really is an old Gardener's Cottage transformed into a tiny restaurant. They serve a 6 course taster menu using locally sourced Scottish ingredients. It is quite pricey, but we think worth every penny!! They only have seats fr a around 30 people, so really worth booking well in advance of your trip.

We actually got married here, so have an obvious bias towards Timberyard! The restaurant is inside a renovated timberyard, think beautiful high ceilings and rustic decor. They use only local Scottish products and have an extensive wine menu. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and will happily talk you through the menu. It is very popular and we recommend booking in advance of your trip. You must try one of their cocktails, they change with the season and are delicious!!

Tapas style Indian food. This is our favourite place for Indian food. You can order a selection of dishes to share, which means you can try a few pieces from the menu. It is seriously yummy! It can get really busy in the evening, so well worth booking a table to guarantee you get in.

Go!!! That is all I have to say. If you are in the Grassmarket, it would be a crime not to visit Mary. She makes gelato fresh everyday. Through the Festival you might have to queue, so get there early and please wait, it's worth it :) Try some of the more unusual flavours, Mary is a flavour wizard. In the winter she also makes a hot chocolate float. Soooo good!

Only on on a Sunday, we head here if we aren't working. We always head to the Harujuku Kitchen for delicious Japanese Dumplings or Soba Noodles, but there are many other choices!! We like to stock up on locally produced meat, vegetables and fruit. It is predominantly a food market, but you will also find stalls selling vintage clothing, plants, hand made wooden boards, locally made jewellery and prints. The stalls change week on week.

More a cafe and take away bar than Delicatessen. They serve really lovely salads, made fresh on a daily basis - always different and using in-season produce. You can either sit in or take away. They serve a really delicious brunch menu - we love the Mexican eggs!!

Delicious Japanese food with a calm atmosphere. Their sushi is delicious and they have an ever-changing specials menu. Really worth a visit, we like to go at lunchtime when it's a little quieter.

This place is super local. It is a little independently run wine bar. They don't serve hot food, instead they offer cold platters of cheese, meats or pates. It's a little gem and is hidden away in a basement. Fab for an early evening drink and nibble.

Owned by Tom Kitchin, The Scran and Scallie is offers seriously good pub food! It's a little pricey, so we like to make an evening of it and go for cocktails too! It is always full of locals, so it is really best to book in advance.

Homemade cakes. One things Mimi is not is mean!! Expect big slices of cakes and huge scones. There is a savoury menu, but really it's all about the cakes! It's worth taking a little time to wander about at the shore while you are here.

Drinks & Nightlife

This is a traditional pub filled with locals! They serve pub food - we love their Yorkshire pudding filled with mash and sausages, soooo good! They have a good selection of ales and spirits. They have live music nights on a Sunday.

Sightseeing

Calton Hill is a great place to go and get your bearings! It is a short (if steep) walk from the flat and offers spectacular views of the city, down Princes Street and up to the Castle in one direction and looking down Leith and out on the the Firth of the Forth in the other direction. Grab a picnic and head up on a sunny day for a lazy lunch.

Parks & Nature

Arthur's Seat is an old extinct volcano. It is quite steep and I would recommend wearing a decent pair of shoes. It gets quite busy in the summer with both locals and tourists alike. Once at the top you get a full 360 degree views of the city. It really is well worth taking half a day out of your trip to do. Grab a nice cold drink when you get back down to the bottom.

We head here regularly for a green fix! The Botanics is fairly large, it has fantastic glass houses full of orchids, palms and other exotic plants (my favourite place). There are a couple cafes that you can head into to grab a bite to eat or a drink. At the centre you can find Inverleith House which is an art gallery, they always have really great exhibitions on.

Shopping

A gift shop and homewares shop offering a wide range of different products. They have a large selection of prints, gift cards and books which are an easy thing to take home if you are travelling. We love their "50 Shades of Scotland" print. Pop in for a dose of colour!

For all of your meat needs! Pop into Crombies. Their sausages are legendary, we love the Special Pork ones, but they make sausages in lots of different flavours - like Wild Boar, whisky and thyme or sweet chilli. They also serve hot food to take away at lunchtime and sell a selection of ready meals.
