Sightseeing

Enjoy a guided tour of the Trinity House Lighthouse at Portland Bill. For nearly 300 years a lighthouse has stood on Portland Bill to guide vessels heading for Portland and Weymouth and acting as a waymark for vessels navigating in the English Channel. A red sector light warns mariners of the hazardous Shambles Bank lying three miles offshore.

Rodwell Trail and Sandsfoot Castle and Café Close to the local’s beaches of Sandsfoot and castle cove, is the Sandsfoot café. Doing fantastic coffee and icecream this is an amazing local beauty spot – overlooking the beautiful Sandsfoot Castle. Perched on the edge of the cliff, Sandsfoot Castle was built by Henry VIII, and has recently been restored for visitors. With beautiful, well kept gardens overlooking Portland Harbour, this is a great place to stop for a coffee after cycling around Portland or a relaxed stroll on the Rodwell trail – which is the former railway line to Wyke Regis.

Durdle door and Lulworth cove Durdle Door is one of the most photographed landmarks along the Jurassic Coast. This rock arch in the sea was formed as a result of the softer rocks being eroded away behind the hard limestones, allowing the sea to punch through them. The name Durdle is derived from an Old English word 'thirl' meaning bore or drill. Below the cliffs lies a sweeping beach that was once three separate coves. This popular beach has no facilities although there are public toilets at Durdle Door Holiday Park. In summer, a mobile kiosk on the path leading to Durdle Door provides ice creams and refreshments.

Blue pool A beautiful Blue Pool surrounded by 25 acres of heath and woodland at Furzebrook which constantly varies in colour. Very fine clay in suspension in the water diffracts light in different ways, producing a spectrum of colour sometimes green sometimes turquoise. Set in a deep clay bowl, steps lead down to the waters edge or up to views of the Purbeck Hills. The Pool is lined with sandy paths that take you around a huge variety of wildlife and flora in the area. Open 1st March to 30th November from 9:30am to 5pm - later in the summer.

Book ahead for this popular locals spot. Their burgers are great, and the service good. Not far from the seafront, hit the esplanade after for an ice cream on the beach.
