Sightseeing

The largest beach in the vicinity, popular with surfers and families. When the tide is out, there is three miles of sand to walk along in front of the dunes, whilst fun to be had with children, rock pooling on and exploring the caves. There is lifeguard cover during the summer months. Summerhouse & The Watering Hole are on the beach to provide refreshments. The coast between Perranporth, St Agnes and Porthtowan provided much of the inspiration for Poldark author Winston Graham who lived in Perranporth for many years. A granite memorial bench is nestled in the dunes to commemorate his life.

Enjoy a leisurely bike ride along the Camel Trail, rewarded with the hustle and bustle of Padstow or further on past the war memorial for incredible beach overlooking Rock. You can get the ferry over to Rock and walk to Polzeath, gorgeous.

Crantock offers a large expanse of golden sands backed by dunes between the Pentire Headland to the west and the Gannel river to the east. Popular for swimming, snorkelling, surfing and windsurfing with board/canoe hire on the beach. Dolphins occasionally visit too! The river also causes currents that can be dangerous, at certain stages of the tide. This is the reason why the lifeguards advise not swimming near the river flow and only when and where they designate it is safe to do so. There have also been some reports of quicksand close to the river edge and at the far end of the beach towards West Pentire. We suggest that visitors remain vigilant especially in these two areas of beach.

No lifeguard or facilities, though a pub (Bowgie Inn) near to the car park Situated in a deep cove between headlands, with Crantock beach to the north and Holywell Bay to the south Porth Joke is often overlooked. Known locally as Polly Joke this unspoilt sandy beach can be an oasis of calm throughout the year despite being 5 miles from Newquay. The narrow beach here is deeper than it is wide and backs onto a shallow valley with a stream running down. At low tide there is enough sand here on even the busiest day, there are also rock pools and caves for explorers of all ages. Access to Porth Joke is fairly limited with the small car park being a fair walk away. Then again, this is probably a price worth paying for the relative peace and quiet, its beautiful!

National Trust car park available Holywell Bay is a vast, sweeping, golden sand beach with impressive grass-tufted dunes. Its Atlantic swells attract surfers and bodyboarders, and the beach is popular with families, but Holywell Bay has retained a rural, unspoilt feel. A mile-long at low tide, the beach is dotted with rock pools and shallow streams. At low tide it is possible to explore the fascinating grotto-like Holywell Cave with its calcium deposits but do be careful not to get cut off. The wreck of an old Argentinian coaster can also be seen just offshore at low tide. The eye-catching slate pyramids known as Gull Rocks, emerging from the sea about 500 metres from the beach, make a stunning focal point, particularly silhouetted at sunset.

Neighbourhoods

Gorgeous village, small shops and cafes St Agnes’s main beach and has lifeguard cover during the summer. It is overlooked by Schooner’s Bistro and is within 100 metres of the Driftwood Spars. The RNLI have an inshore lifeboat based here and Lifeboat Day is held each August. It is a popular beach with surfers. If you take the coast path west from Trevaunance you will visit the much-photographed Wheal Coates that perches on the edge of the cliff.

An absolute family favourite. An organic farm, produce from the farm is integral to our busy kitchen, where our chefs create feasts influenced by their surroundings – using the best of what’s available from the fields, hedgerows, kitchen garden or larder. Feasts nights are AMAZING, check-online for details.
